what is thing with the rubber bands on the tuners?

This is the first instrument that I’ve built. It is loosely patterned after a 1910-ish Giuseppe Pedrazzini that is owned and played in the Grand Rapids Symphony by Kevin Flannery. I spent a little over a week, over the course of about 12 months, in Kevin’s shop taking notes and instruction from Kevin on the basics. I would take the projects home and proceed to wear his patience thin over the phone during the year that it took me to complete the bass. It has been played almost daily, and gigged with nearly every weekend since August of 2008.

I need to fund the making of #2, but I’m broke. So I am putting this one up for sale. I’m asking $5000, or would consider cash and trade. The details are as follows:

All woods were well aged, in a climate controlled environment. Back and sides are of a highly figured Indiana red maple. The top is Engleman spruce. The neck is of flamed European maple. Fittings are a Wittner composite tailpiece, Despiau bridge, Golihur carbon fiber endpin, ebony fingerboard, and Gagnon tuners. The neck is fairly meaty at about 1 ¾” (including the fingerboard) near the middle. It is currently strung with Pirastro Evah Pirazzi’s. I'm not completely happy with the tuners as evidenced in the pictures where you can see the rubber bands to keep them from rattling. It's not a big deal, the rubber bands keep em' quite and are barely noticeable but I thought it best to say something about it. Were I keeping the bass, I would probably replace them as finances allow. Measurements are listed below.

String Length: 41 ¼”
Upper Bout: 19 5/8”
C-Bout: 14 ½”
Lower Bout: 26 1/8”
Length from the bottom to where ribs end: 42 ¾”
Rib depth at the neck: 6 ½”
Rib depth at the c’s: 8”
Rib depth at the bottom: 8 7/8”
Length from bottom to the top of the scroll: 70 ½”
Neck width at the nut: 1 ¾”
Neck width at the heel: 2 7/8”

If there are any other questions I can answer, feel free to fire away. I’m located north of Fort Wayne, Indiana- about a 2 ½ hour drive from Indy, Chicago, and Detroit. Get in touch if you would like to stop by and give it a test run.

Thanks for looking.

Pretty bass Aren--congratulations on your first!

How does it sound? How does it compare with the bass you patterned it after?

Sound samples would be much appreciated too...

I haven't had the opportunity to make any A-B comparisons between the two. The original is a round back with more plain wood and different varnish so it would be really tough to try to compare two. Plus, its had about 100 more years worth of time to mature.

I've owned a Shen Hybrid, a couple Kays, a couple older German shop basses and spent quite a bit of time with a decent modern, Romanian bass as well as various other instruments in this range. I'm much happier with the sound of this one than any that I've had. It has really nice sustain and good growl for jazz. The E and A have plenty of low end without getting too puffy. It has a nice, clear, focused sound arco. I'm admittedly, not much of an arco player, but the players that have tried it out under the bow have been impressed. To my ear, it has a more mature sound than most basses I've heard in this price range and sounds as good as many basses that I've heard in the $8K -$10K range.

I don't have any quality recordings of it yet, sorry. It's really all up to the individual and what they want to hear out of a bass. That's why I would never buy without hearing first.

The bass is still available. The sound post position and bridge were recently tweeked and it sounds better than ever. Someone get in touch and give this bass a test drive! For the price, I'm positive, you will not be dissappointed!!!
