what's the single most important piece of musical knowledge everyone has learned that has affected/improved their playing? anything, from eq'ing to technique to theory to....whatever.

for me, it was learning to think in terms of chord arpeggios rather than scales, really changed me forever.

yours?

Using your ears, both for note choice and rhythm, but also for listening within the group.

I don't know what you other guys are smoking, but it seems like jazzbo here is the only one who knows what he's talking about, and so I agree with him on this one.

That knowledge won't get you anywhere without the groove in your heart.

BTW...Jazzbo's scale and chord theory was very informative and written excellently. I got a better grip on some basics that I had almost forgotten.

You have all proven my answer to be correct.
I just want to go on record that I would agree with Jazzbo's "G# locrian mode" had he said in the context of an Afro-Cuban Groove.
Otherwise I can not agree.

Thanks for your time.

Well of course they must have meant that the single most important piece of musical knowledge they have leaned was not to use Tabs! ;)

I'm rather disappointed in you. It goes without saying that the only important type of music is the Afro-Cuban groove, therefore my statement was, and is, appropriate.

How many times must we go through this? How many more episodes of drama must we endure? You always say you'll try harder, but you never do! I'm so tired Gruff. I'm so very tired. I can't do this anymore. Not here, not now, not ever. You had your chance. No ponies are going to do the trick this time. You say you'll change, but you never do. I'm not coming home to find you naked in the bathtub, strung out on cookies anymore. I just can't do this.

Is it a pink pony? Maybe a pink pony.

That you're never as bad as you think you are, or as good...so you should play with confidence and go with your gut, but stay humble.

No matter how good/bad of a player you are, there's always someone that's better/worse out there. And everyone has a different opinion and style. The only one that matters though is yours.

Amen. Right on.

I consider myself a musician rather than a bassist, I'm a musician and my instrument of choice is a bassguitar (most of the time).

So I'm not a bad bassist, I'm a bad musician. :)

Beyond what so many of these great bassists have said i would say the biggest thing that i learned was to just be comfortable with my own playing, go my own direction and make my own sound. Bottom line...think for yourself.

You're close, my friend. It's not DROPPING the count, but INTERNALIZING it so you can better feel the music. My foot taps and body rocks now instead of saying "1,2,3..." in my head.

Using your ear rather than theory (but you should learn as much theory as you can).
