I got your email yesterday. Thanks. I know a lot of players in the area 'cause I've been around for a while. Without exception when I mention TalkBass they've never heard of it. Many of the older guys don't have computers or are just intimidated by them. I've learned a lot on TB and made some good friends. I'm kinda in a a second childhood with bass though I've played professionally for a long time. I live on the northshore near Covington. So what's the scene like at Scrubs on Thursday night? NOLABASS 12-10-2002, 10:10 AM Hey man, Demeter, Acme, and QSC must be smiling due to all the internet bass players that have purchased that rig! Scrubs (across from Ochsner Hospital on Jefferson Highway) is really one of the best blues jams in town. Not a lot of guitards struting the yard, not a lot of over the top egos. Everybody gets to play, and everbody seems to get along. Way differant from most the other jams. (read Checkpoint Charlies) There are a lot of blues players, rather than jazz players wanting to play something different. Jazz players are cool, don't get me wrong, but if it's a blues jam, we should be playing blues. I've been here since '95, made some friends, and am just now starting to get the occational gig. Tuff town, you know? Gard 12-11-2002, 08:32 AM Former Northshore & BRLA checkin' in! Heya Gantt, how's things in Covington??? :D I may be back in Slide-hell for a few day the end of the month, 'round Christmas, if so, I'll let ya know, maybe we can have a beer somewhere! NOLA - yeah, NOLA is a weird town. I was lucky and hooked up with a house gig in the Quarter for a year or so when I was living in BR. Bit of a commute, long nights (6 hrs, 5 nites a week! ), but the best training I ever got. Burned out too fast though, same room every night sounds nice at first (no moving equipment, no traveling to the gig, etc), but man, that room just SUCKED after the first 8-9 months! ;) Was at the 544 Club, if you're curious as to where, 98-99 if you wanna know when. Good to see another Lousy-ana-ian 'round! Stay in touch! ganttbos 12-12-2002, 09:07 PM Nolabass, I'm gonna come to Scrub's with a drummer friend and check it out. Is it every Thursday night? We had a jam night every other Thursday at Melius in Bucktown for over a year - lookin' to get it going again. See you soon! Gard, If you're a quarter rat you probably know Andree Dupepe. She was 17 the first time we gigged together - also sang with my tux-gig band around 98-99 for a year or so. Thankfully the last time I worked the quarter other than private gigs was in 1969 (were you born yet?) at the Inner Section on Decatur street. My last gig with my 60's tour band was 6 nights/6 hours at the Flying Dutchman in Charleston SC in June 1972. We just had a 30-year reunion (with the remaining living members :D ) last summer. By all means get in touch if you visit at Xmas time! NOLABASS 12-12-2002, 09:39 PM Originally posted by ganttbos I'm gonna come to Scrub's with a drummer friend and check it out. Is it every Thursday night? Cool! ganttbos , Yea man, every Thursday night...9-12. Although I don't know what will happen the week of Christmas. I'll be playing a Lakland more than likely. Gard, where Y'at! So, tell me, how can you be a moderator? I don't think I ever met anybody who lived in New Orleans that did anything in moderation. You must be a rehabilitated moderatie.;) PollyBass 12-12-2002, 09:49 PM yea yeah,, but other parts of the state are awesome! representin northeast! in the city of farmerville!!! ....... Wow, my town sucks. NOLABASS 12-12-2002, 09:54 PM Hey PollyBass, plenty of Soul to soak up in La. in general! Amazing how many astounding drummers there are. Seems even the piano players have great timing. You know how a Nashville drummer counts 7/8 time? 1-2-3-4-5-6-se-ven Ganttbos, theres also a real good blues jam the first Wed. of the month at Maple Leaf on Oak. Gard 12-13-2002, 01:24 PM NOLA - Like my avatar sez - I'm in the Kingdom of the Rat, better known as Orlando, FL (home of Did-knee Whirled...mouse...rat....a rat's a big mouse, and trust me in this town, no mouse is bigger'n Mickey :p). I did my time as an unmoderated man when I was growin' up there - you don't live long like that though! ;) Oh, and the Nashville drummer bit...classic! Gotta remember that one...1 2 3 4 5 6 sev en!!!! :D Gantt - Can't say as I know Andree, may have run into her, or heard her sing, but was never "properly introduced". My tendency was to show up at 8:45, play my 6 sets, sit and drink a glass of water between sets, and haul @$$ back to BRLA at 2:45 to snuggle up with the wife for a couple hours before she hadda go to work. Never was in on the "hang". Despite the wonderful musical education it was, I must say I do NOT miss working in the quarter! :p I was all of 6 years old in '69, but I was livin' in Kenner, so we were in the city at the same time! Don't look like I'm gonna make it there for Christmas, situation is in order (wife and I are on the outs, lookin' like a lonely Christmas) but the finances ain't. Guess I'll have to suck it up and spend the holiday at home alone. Polly - Farmerville!!! Wow.... ;) PollyBass 12-14-2002, 05:14 PM Originally posted by Gard Polly - Farmerville!!! Also, you must be proficient at doing it! :D 3) Be able to see the colors green, purple, & gold together and think it looks good. 4) Be able to see an ocean-going freighter go by OVER YOUR HEAD and not be concerned by it. 5) Be able to survive a night of bingeing on Jagermeister. 6) Be able to pronounce Tchopitoulas, know where Thibodeaux is and how to pronounce it, be able to both eat and pronounce beignet (very good with coffee & chicory...another Nawlins taste treat). 7) Be able to go to a Saints game and enjoy yourself - whether they're winning or losing! Kboyd, I live on River Road down from Maple Leaf, used to have a WWOZ Tips pass, spent a lot of evenings their last year. (2001) Worked in a recording studio down the street "Say Yes Studios" Owned by a friend. Recorded Mark Adams solo, and engineered the Rad's latest. My friend did, not me. All I do is lift stuff. Holler at me in my email, and we'll hook up maybe. ganttbos 12-16-2002, 07:31 PM Sorry Gard - Tchoupitoulas with two U's - ya musta been eatin' too many alligator pears sittin' on the neutral ground wid ya mamanem when ya shoulda been studyin' ya spellin', Dawlin'. You guys are probably all too young to remember swimmin' naked in the Audubon Park lagoon while the tourists went by under the Troll Bridge in the Swan Boat. And what about Monkey Hill? That was back in the late 50's when I used to shoot rats with my pellet gun at the city dump across the levee behind where Children's Hospital now stands. There was a homeless guy about a hundred years old with a beard named MouMou who used to baptize us in the river. He lived in in the dump in a hut made out of stuff he salvaged (guess he wasn't really homeless). We used to bring him canned goods and give him the change we had in our pockets. I remember one Christmas morning riding our new bikes up to see MouMou. We brought him Christmas dinner - turkey with all the fixin's - he cried, and made us all cry. NOLABASS 12-16-2002, 07:52 PM ganttbos, nice story, very nice. Will be at Scrubs Thursday for sure. I think it's the last till after Christmas, a few of us are gonna make it. Kind of a musicians Christmas party jam. Come on over. jazzbo 12-16-2002, 11:26 PM Originally posted by Gard 1) Be able to play "Hey Pocky Way" with authority. Check. Tchoupitoulas - (Chow - puh - too - lus). As in "Wild..." I have a CD by them. Thibodeaux - (Tib - ah - do). Beignet - (Bin yeh) - Had them at Cafe du Monde countless times. I have a Cafe du Monde coffee mug in the cupboards right now. 7) Be able to go to a Saints game and enjoy yourself - whether they're winning or losing! Love the Saints. Know what the phrase K&B purple means. Got me on that. Lagniappe: Do I get points for having been to two Funky Meters concerts, have a wealth of Professor Longhair, Huey Piano Smith, Preservation Hall, Dr. John, James Booker, HCJ, and Wild Tchoupitoulas CDs. Does it count that I've been to 4 Dr. John performances, met and talked to Zig twice and heard him perform many many times, along with George Porter, Jr. and HCJ? What about the many many trips to New Orleans I've made, always making my way to Preservation Hall, Rhythms, and Pat O'Briens. Does it matter that I've been on down to the Audobon Zoo, and funny, they all axed for you? Does it help that I can play Big Cheif and Tipitina, and that I've been to Tipitina's. How about my Flamingo Casino Players club card? C'mon! Let me in! If you lived here, would you call it San Fran for short, or Frisco? It can be only one or the other, and one is terribly wrong. 5. Gard 01-06-2003, 08:29 AM ...just wanted to finally mention that I'd had the opportunity to visit with Gantt and his lovely wife the day before Christmas. Wonderful people, lovely house out in the beautiful rolling countryside northeast of Covington on the Northshore, and man, he's got some killer gear! :D I must say the Wayne Jones cabs are IMPRESSIVE sounding, and those Warmoths are wonderful playing and sounding basses. Can't wait to check out the results of the refin on the MTD! Gantt, I want to thank you and your wife publicly for your kindness and hospitality - you brightened a very sad time for me. Things are not better as yet, it's very much a rollercoaster still in my life, but I think there is still hope and am working towards reinforcing it. It is my sincere hope that things in my marriage work out, and that I can bring my wife by the next time we're in Louisiana together, she will adore your place, and you folks as well. Do you profess to only like the Niners when they're winning, and to generally not care about them at all when they're losing, proving yourself the most fairweather of fans? Well...as a die-hard Saints fan, I grew up HATING the '9ers. Now that they're in a different division...they're ok. Great game yesterday, nice comeback. I like Jeff Garcia as a QB too. 4. If you lived here, would you call it San Fran for short, or Frisco? It can be only one or the other, and one is terribly wrong. San Fran. 5. Can you experience a 4.5 earthquake and not even mention it after it's passed, yet freak out at the thought of 2 inches of rain? I think I can handle the earthquakes, although being from the wet and wild southeast, the rain thing wouldn't even be a blip on my radar screen. Sadly, the fact that my wife has a major earthquake phobia means I probably won't get much chance to visit your fair city - she won't even consider visiting! :( 6. Give me one valid reason to go to Fisherman's Wharf. Good dungeoness crab w/cheese, watching the candle makers (can't remember the name of the shop, but it was so cool!) 7. Must be able to play "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay" while resisting the urge to whistle. Pick a key! As a non-tourist, SF resident, would you use cable cars to get from point A to point B? Nope. Sorry. Nobody uses them, that I know. Although, we really should, as they are kind of cool. 2. What's the Castro known for? The "gay mecca". As moley said, the Castro district has an extremely high gay population and was instrumental in the gay rights movement began in the 50s and 60s. 3. Do you profess to only like the Niners when they're winning, and to generally not care about them at all when they're losing, proving yourself the most fairweather of fans? It's perfectly acceptable to like other football teams, and still live here in SF. Why? Well, we have the most fairweather fans of any town. We win, we gloat. We lose, we didn't like them anyway. Bah. Excellent answer though Gard, as I HATE the niners too. 4. If you lived here, would you call it San Fran for short, or Frisco? It can be only one or the other, and one is terribly wrong. San Fran. 5. Can you experience a 4.5 earthquake and not even mention it after it's passed, yet freak out at the thought of 2 inches of rain? "Hey, did you guys feel that earthquake last night?" "Oh, there was a quake." "OH MY GOD! IT'S SPRINKLING! IT'S LIKE A STORM." We can't handle rain. We turn into bluthering idiots. A few drops on the windshield and any driving skills whatsoever go completely out the window. While the news programs cry for rain, as we're often in a drought, they then curse it upon arrival. Fical. 6. Give me one valid reason to go to Fisherman's Wharf. Good answers Gard. My original answer was, "when your showing a friend/relative tourist the city, but I like your answer. And for dungeness crab, you go to the restaurant I work at, Crustacean. 7. As long as you have no problem paying $1400 a month for rent, for a 600 sq. ft. apartment, with no parking. You must have no problem being as liberal as all hell, hating our mayor, yet loving his fashion sense, deploring everything New York and Los Angeles, be eclectic, not be afraid to color your hair any spectrum of the rainbow, yet clearly understand what putting a rainbow sticker on your car means exactly. We're working on plans for a second tier of pallets on the floor. The futons and infla-ta beds are filling all available acreage, and my engineers say a second level might work, unless of course we have an earthquake. Suspension cables could Carry the bulk of the weight. Our calculations indicate that a two level suspension type pallet would at least support the West coasters, but the Southerners will have to sleep on ground level, being the West coasters vs. Southerners life styles dictate that most the "mass" should be kept as low to the ground as possible to avoid any late night room spinning. We're expecting a surplus of supplies after Mardi Gras, and should not expend our stocks till the need, or urge, arises. Necessity normally peaks at or near Tiptinas at 2:00am on the second weekend. The jam at Scrubs has moved around a bit, but seems to be settling in at Turtles, on North Howard and Airline out in Kenner land. A small neighborhood bar that is good size for blues. 20-30 people is a house party there. And yes, just bring a bass, don't even need that, the house bass player will let you play his P-Bass I'm sure. Good folks for the most part, not a lot of cocks strutting the yard there. Thursday at 9:00. NOLABASS 01-19-2003, 01:13 PM Originally posted by nojazzloco any of you guys remember brandon rivas? used to play with mark whitfield, ellis marsalis and kronk? he also had the biggest set of eyebrows on earth!! I've seen Kronk, but don't personally know Brandin, I'm sure I would recognize if I saw him again though. Now I'll be staring at every bass player in NOLA checking out their eyebrows...... Comics 01-20-2003, 07:37 PM NOLABASS - I'll keep that in mind. Sounds like its worth checking out. Watch out - as the Fest gets closer you're going to turn into a booking agent for hotel rooms! I've already posted my "No Room at the Inn" sign before the question is asked. NOLABASS 01-20-2003, 07:55 PM Change of venue again, the jam is at ba-da-bings in Fat City Thursdays 9-12. Thats Bada Bings at 3515 Hessmer Av. Metry 454-1120. The jam at Turtles is on Thursday 9-12 too, I'm playing in the house band at BaDa Bings. We'll just have to see where it alls ends up. Who do you like locally to listen too? What clubs do you like? Where do you play? Comics 01-22-2003, 06:22 PM Good question! I keep pretty busy so I don't get out much - I'd love to, but time has been tight. Of course George Porter, Jr. is great. I like Paul Clement w/ Woodenhead, although fusion is not my thing. There are so many guys out there, so many great players, but I don't know many by name. I've played Rock'n'Bowl alot (usually once every six weeks), Jimmy's (R.I.P.), a few clubs/bars once or twice like Wall Street, Quill's. Mostly private parties, weddings, etc. NOLABASS 01-22-2003, 10:45 PM Who did you play rock 'N Bowl with, I go there a bit. JBDammit 01-24-2003, 05:57 PM Not that she plays bass but do you ever see Lynn Drury? Absolutley love her voice. Comics 01-30-2003, 07:46 PM NOLABASS - I play for the Bucktown All-Stars - we were at R'n'B just before New Years - it was a good time. That place is so New Orleans, ok, N'Awlins, it's great. Where else can you eat, dance and bowl under one roof! NOLABASS 01-31-2003, 01:31 AM Hey comics, I know you! I'm the guy that supervises the massage therapist (Blue Cliff) at all those Cresent City Classic events. Small internet. Comics 02-01-2003, 11:26 AM Man, it's been a few years since we've done CCC! Which is probably good, cause I'm running them now - playing after that could bite the big one - nothing like dehydrating and passing out on stage - that would get me in the paper! I'll keep an eye out for you this year - it's going to be a hot one - late in the season this year NOLABASS 02-01-2003, 01:49 PM I'll be at Mardi Gras Marathon this year Feb. 16th.....runnin? Comics 02-05-2003, 09:08 PM I'm going to try it this year, the half marathon that is. It's the first time I'm trying that distance, so I'm not expecting much - hopefully I'll finish while I can still run in the street! I'm hoping for 2.5 hours - we'll see. NOLABASS 02-05-2003, 10:25 PM Cool, holler at me, I'll be the fat guy not running supervising the 40-50 massage therapist.:) Stewmc5222 12-12-2003, 02:59 PM hey all, just wanted to see what's up with my fellow Crescent City low enders. got to meet both Pete and Kyley recently and I'm always looking to play. just did a solo show with Trip Wamsley and hoping to do another one next month. holler back at me, y'all! from the depths of it, Stew NOLABASS 12-13-2003, 04:23 PM Hey Stew, after reading back a few post I realized my band Fat Finger is almost a year old. This thread just won't die, and I like it. We have enough players identified in NOLA now to have a get together. Any ideas? Stewmc5222 12-13-2003, 04:56 PM hey Peter, funny that you mentioned it. I'm trying to organize a few "bass nights" around town. th eplace where I've done my solo shows wants me to do a regular thing and I was thinking that I'd do sort of small showcase series. I've got Trip Wamsley coming out again next month (woo-hoo!!:D ), but I'd like to get in touch with as many players in the area as possible and do a whole night, take over a club somewhere for a low frequency hang. what do you think? from the low end, Stew NOLABASS 12-13-2003, 06:33 PM Cooool. Post it in the Pit too. I'll be there. Stewmc5222 12-13-2003, 11:06 PM Saturday night and I've got WWOZ playing the Fat Finger live jam! very tasty groove, Peter. I'll post to the 'pit, but I've got a thread going in 'Bassists'. point other NOLA cats to either or both if you can! :D from the funkin' lows, Stew Comics 12-25-2003, 09:30 PM Let me know if y'all set something up - a little local "Lords of the Low Frequencies" jam would be fun (but probably just for us bassists). Long time, no chat, where y'at NOLABASS? Go Tigers! Stewmc5222 12-25-2003, 10:01 PM hey Comics, Trip Wamsley is coming to town for a show on the 10th and I think we're going to brinastorm about doing a NOLA bass gig. would you be willing to play? where are you in town, by the way? from the depths, Stew NOLABASS 12-26-2003, 12:46 PM Hey comics. I'm gonna try to make the 10th myself. I don't have a gig that night and would like to have a meeting of the nola bass players.. I have to holler at Butch , too. NOLABASS 12-27-2003, 12:21 PM Hey, click here stew (http://pub206.ezboard.com/fthedudepitfrm16.showMessage?topicID=7209.topic) Stewmc5222 12-27-2003, 12:33 PM coolness! thanks, man! this should be a blast! :D from the depths, Stew Stewmc5222 01-07-2004, 12:28 PM hey all, just wanted to put a bug in your ear: Trip and I will be doing the show this Saturday night. afterwards I want to either talk about starting some bass showcase gigs or get phone numbers and email addresses so that we can start some planning! the show should be a blast. no cover, no age limit, no drink minimum, and more strings than you can shake a stick at! Trip's also been writing on his Alembic 8 and the big blue beast is going to make a rare appearance!! :D  hope to see some of you cats there! from the low end, Stew jmarcus2 01-08-2004, 05:25 PM Hey NOLABASS, Had to jump in on this... Just visited New Orleans for New Years and the Nat'l Championship game (got close but didn't actually go). We took in as much food and music as I could consume. Loved it! Longtime musician, tired of LA, thinking seriously sellin' the house and relocatin'. Any advice on getting estsblished for working/gigging appreciated. (BTW, I passed the quiz.) NOLABASS 01-08-2004, 10:04 PM Longtime musician, tired of LA, thinking seriously sellin' the house and relocatin' Heh heh, I can't tell you how often you here the same story. "I came for a visit and couldn't wait to move there for good". As a musician, NOLA can really feed your soul. It's taken a few years to start getting many gigs here. Plan on hanging a while and meeting folks. If I had better jazz chops it might be easier. But I'm doing OK. Up and Down, you know? In the mean time, some of the best food on the planet, some of the best music on the planet, and cool attitudes all round. Why not, it sure as Hell ain't LA. NOLA is Third World and Proud Of It! Stewmc5222 01-11-2004, 10:20 AM hey all, the show with Trip was just a blast. we each did some solo stuff and improv'd a bit of duet playing. Mr. Wamsley was definitely the star attraction, though: what a monster! what a great sense of humor! much thanks to the TB members who came out to support us and do the (limited) hang. still looking to organize a bass night, so keep the email and PM's coming! from the low end, Stew NOLABASS 01-12-2004, 01:37 AM Good job Stew. You guys missed out. Thanks for coming out to the Fat Finger gig too guys. Have a good time at NAMM. Show 'em what you got. Play well man. Stewmc5222 01-12-2004, 09:47 AM thanks, Peter! and thanks for letting me sit in last night. by the way, I loved what you guys did with "The Ocean"!! I always dig hearing you cats play. I've got a wacky lead on a location for bass night, so I'll tell you about that when I get back from the west coast... :D stay well and keep the funk alive, man! from the low end, Stew peteroberts 01-12-2004, 06:36 PM the thread that wouldn't die!! I think I'm part of a wicked new 3 piece. I'll keep you guys up on the latest there... NAMM should be a blast. I'll get y'all the low down wne I come back. as to the bass night, I have a tentative date for March 9th. it's a Tuesday night, but it's a start. would either of you consider doing some solo stuff? I want to try and avoid bands, but bass duets and trios might be fun... from the lows, Stew NOLABASS 01-12-2004, 11:31 PM Yea Stew, I might like to do something. I need an excuse to work something up. Let me think about it and bail at the last minute. ;) Stewmc5222 01-13-2004, 03:20 AM Originally posted by NOLABASS ... I might like to do something. I'm definitely excited to see who we'll get to play! from the lows, Stew NOLABASS 01-13-2004, 11:18 AM Yea, I've known Owen a while. He will either play stick or some cheap 16 string Ho Bag. Dean I think. Heh ;) Stewmc5222 01-13-2004, 12:41 PM yeah, I got to hear him play it last week. the 12 string, I mean. not a bad tone for a Dean! from the lows, Stew NOLABASS 01-13-2004, 01:01 PM Owens a good guy, he always shows up with something else, he must own 20 basses. Stewmc5222 01-13-2004, 01:05 PM I won't get to see it, but he's playing tomorrow night at Cafe Negril. he told me he's pulling out all the stops for this show. I forgot the name of the band, but it's the instrumental prog rock trio with Louis Carillo drumming. from the lows, Stew NOLABASS 01-13-2004, 05:05 PM OK, so you guys do the multiple string thing, I'll show up with a P Bass and flats. We'll go from one extreme to the other. Or is there gonna be a minimum string limit, like no less than 6, no more than 50 sorta thing?:smug: peteroberts 01-13-2004, 07:10 PM If I bring all my basses, I will have 20 strings.:D (24 if I bring the upright) NOLABASS 01-13-2004, 07:22 PM Hey Pete, check it out Click here for MP3 (http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=112814) Stewmc5222 01-13-2004, 07:32 PM Originally posted by NOLABASS OK, so you guys do the multiple string thing, I'll show up with a P Bass and flats. NOLABASS 01-15-2004, 04:29 AM it's about bass, not numbers of strings. great players, great grooves, and great music! Amen Brother, but I can't resist a little ribbing on you young wipper snappers. No offense intended. I've think I've been around the Blues Police too much lately.
