Hi all,
I've been listening to a lot of Stu Hamm's stuff lately. I was curious if there are any other Hamm enthusiasts here on the archive. His tapping is pretty good, and I enjoy his "Quahogs Anyone?" solo. What do you think of his Fender Urge Bass? Pretty flashy. What album of Hamm's do you like the best? Just wondering what your thoughts are, thanks.

Andy

I like his earlier stuff best, Radio Free Albemuth and especially Kings Of Sleep.

His Urge bass sounds like poo to me compared to the Kubickis he was using on those albums.

His latest, Outbound...well I don't think his collaborations with DJs etc. worked too well, similar to his singing efforts on The Urge.

But he's still a great player, and one of my major influences. I also dig the Gambale/Hamm/Smith project more than Henderson/Wooten/Smith, better material, and I prefer Gambale over Henderson.

Hmmm , I remember seeing him at Academy of Sound last November . Woah .

He's good, but I wish he would cut out the singing, the DJs etc. and just play bass. As for tone, I'm probably in the minority when I say he sounds better now than he used to with the Kubickis. Either way, his sound is an acquired taste - kind of dinky/guitar-y and not bassy enough for most.

He did some nice arrangements of classical material on his first two albums. How 'bout a full album of that stuff?

stus a good player....I'm not a big fan of the Urge basses...I played two of them at a music store not long ago, and they didn't sound very good...they played well, but I didn't like the tone.

Stu is a great bassist. A friend of mine owns the Urge bass. It has a very clean sound, nice for slap but the pickups are way to many, also its not too easy to play.

Why the audience hates Stu? I have seen in DVD, G3 and Live in San Francisco and everybody is screaming and swearing at him. (after his solo and in the end of the concert)

They're saying "STU!", not "boo".

He's a great player, but ever since going to the Urge basses, his tone is ass.

IMHO if Stu wants to play so many chords and tap around so much, he should just learn piano. :o

He's done some fabulous stuff, but I feel like he's not using the full potential of his bass. Did you read the review of the Urge in Bass Player a while ago? I got the impression its tone would be more suitable for styles other than Stu's approach. Kind of ironic, eh?

I found a link to a complete transcription of that Quahogs tune along with performance notes. Unfortunately, it's only in standard notation.

Enjoy.

In regards to your post that Stu Hamm should give up bass, and learn the piano, what makes you think he'll be so good at piano? It is imperetive that everyone remains open-minded. It is imperetive.

Stu used to play the piano. He started playing bass later. I think he is the coolest bassplayer ever.

Well he dresses bad... Probably the worst dressed bassplayer :) But I think he knows that.

If you don't like tapping don't listen to it.

I saw the Hammster in a clinic at Birmingham's (UK) Bass Centre some years ago, just after he'd had a shave and started using the Urge. His tone was beeeeautiful, and as for his playing...
It was one of those moments when you want to console yourself by thinking, "oh sure, he's a hell of a player... but I bet the guy's a complete arsehole". Unfortunately he turned out to be one of the nicest guys I've met -- polite, friendly, happy to chat. And he reckoned I looked like Jerry Donahue's younger brother, which I can quite happily live with. Wish I could play like him too. :)

BTW, I'm not overkeen on Outbound either, but IMO the whole album is redeemed by Charlotte's Song which is goosebumpingly beautiful.

I'm listening to this classical stuff being played on bass - and I tell you - it must be an aquired taste if you like this stuff. I mean, it's really neat (and incredible) that he can pull this off, but the bass certainly isn't the most pleasing sounding instrument for playing this type of music!

Listen to Debussy - Dr. Gradus on piano vs. the bass and tell me what you REALLY think!

Sure it sounds better on piano. Stuff written for piano often sounds best on piano. It's more of a show off thing. Instead of giving our hero the thumbs down sign don't listen to it.

The funny thing about that piece is that Debussy never intended it to be taken seriously - it's his parody of right-hand piano exercises.
