This is a question for Mr. Manring. I heard that
Zon was developing a 6 string Hyper for you, is there any truth in that rumor? and if so when will the record come out, because that would be way fatt.

Hi Biggus,

Joe Zon and I have been working on a double neck 6-string Hyperbass for way more years than I care to count! It's partially done, but I'm sorry to say that I can't offer an estimate of when it will be finished. Hopefully soon.

JT, we understand that you're bitter about the permanent damage you've done to your back, but that's no reason to drag the rest of us down! Stop encouraging this madness! ;) :D

Edit: Out of curiosity, how tall are you guys?

Even though I'm a 4 string player at heart...I would LOVE a double neck 6 string hyperbass....It would be fun to wiggle around on.

Michael,

Would your doubleneck have 6 strings on each neck, or 6 strings total?

Michael Manring
05-19-2003, 07:46 PM
It will have six strings on each neck, one fretted, one fretless. I'll still have a few strings to go to catch up to John Turner!

im going to revive the thread to ask about the bass again. how's it going?

oh yeah, assuming you have the same crazy bridge which allows you to adjust tunings of pairs of strings to 3 different tunings, and a hipshot detuner on every string, you're looking at

3x3x3x3x3x3x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2 different tunings for the whole thing. ie.

2.9 million tunings.

this actually sounds like the coolest thing ever made.

spaceships and that jazz have nothing on this baby.

Hi Michael,

I'm assuming this would have a 6 string version of the detunable bridge? I ask because I've seen a 6 string Hyperbass that Joe made recently (few months ago) but it was with a standard bridge.

Look forward to hearing about it!

Actually the two bridges for this baby are done. They allow for instant access to three tunings for each neck. The necks are also done and all twelve Hipshots appear to be working. As to how many tunings the entire instrument will offer instant access to, the parameters are somewhat complex, but I believe the correct number can be expressed as, "a whole bunch"!

Very nice! I was just at the shop yesterday dropping a pickup off- I guess I should've seen if a few cool, clean Washington's would've granted me access to a peek! :D

Can't wait to see the finished product. Is there a full cutaway on both neck (which must look interesting on a doubleneck)? If so, is the fretted neck fretted all the way? I remember Joe telling me they only had jigging to do 26 frets.

Awesome!

Michael Manring

No, we decided to keep the fretted neck to 24 frets. We didn't want to make ourselves too crazy!

That's so awesome, I can't wait to see this bass!!

I have this feeling that each lightswitch in your house is decked out with a Hipshot detuner. Now go try buying THOSE in the lighting department at Home Depot! ;)

You oughtta see the toaster oven!
Seeing as how the 'strings' are on the inside it must be quite a task to play the toaster w/o missing a note here and there!

Hmmmmm, this is something I could use! I can't wait until my fretless Conklin is done. It will feature a Dymondwood fingerboard for durability and tone.

I have pics of a Hyper 6 string with a regular bridge, but I doubt there is any way you'll get any more info on this particular project from them!

I once got an email response from Zon for an email I had sent nearly a year earlier. At the time I figured it was because I'm not somebody.

But now I see they blow everyone off, even Manring.

Note that it was 5 years ago that Michael said the bass had already been in development for more years than he could count.

It's nice to read a post of mine from 5 years ago that doesn't make me cringe at how dumb I was.
