Most solos I play are in locrian mode.
It sounds wicked whatever the style.
perfect to darken a happy song of put fury into a mellow tune.

Hi Garrett, good to see you back.

Locrian perhaps has more application in Jazz than, say, metal, I would think.

Half-diminished chords (AKA, m7b5 - or, minor 7th with flat 5th) are one candidate.

It's might be worth pointing out that the flat 2nd is something of an "avoid note" in this case. A better scale to use over half dim chords might be the 6th mode of the melodic minor. The only difference between that and Locrian is that it doesn't have a flattened 2nd.

So, B Locrian would be:

B C D E F G A B

Whereas the 6th mode of melodic minor, transposed to B, would be:

B C# D E F G A B

The C# works well over a half-diminished chord.

Still, play the scale, internalise its sound, and you never know where you'll find a use for it.

moley,

Locrian #2 is the sixth mode of the melodic minor scale, also known as half-diminished.

Ah crap, that'll teach me to post late at night.

You're right of course, I'll go correct that.

Thanks...i THINK Locrian is the one I'm thinking of...there's no 5th degree..I'm trying to picture it..oh well

Yea figures, I don't like jazz, guess that's why I'm having trouble making use of it =P

There is, but it's flattened. Locrian has the flat 5th, rather than the perfect 5th that all the other modes of the major scale have.

Well then work out how you can fit it into the music you do like :)

So don't use it.

Locrian is an available color, nothing more. If you were a painter, there's no rule that says you have to use red.

Not enough 'hoover-like' sounds for you eh? ;)

I dig Locrian. It can sound sinister yet peppy - in a demented circus kind of way.

Is the Locrian mode in any way related to the "Tone-Locrian" mode?

That'd be you, if anything. Aren't we suppose to be open minded here?

So what if I don't like jazz...I don't yell at people who don't like classical. To each his own.

By the way, "warrant" is spelled w-a-r-r-a-n-t

Hey you bastard, I thought you left. Yeah, I'm a Dust Devil man myself ;)

And Pacman

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. I was just trying to write a riff for each mode, and locrain was being a little whore :D

just takes a little more work to "fit something in".

Man, Hoover-metal, I never heard of that? Bruce where did you hear this suction rock, it sounds like something I need to appreciate! ;)

A guy in my rock/metal band sent me an mp3 of a band called, wait for it this is funny, GOATSNAKE, yep that's right, "GOAT" "SNAKE", but as one word. What a ridiculous band name!! :D
This particular track sounded like an ensemble of road drills and typewriters, with an angry bear on vocals, which is why I wondered about this hoover-metal Bruce seems to know so much about?!

Locrian, yeah tis a tricky one to fit in, since none of my bands tend to use b5ths all that often, a shame cause I like locrian :(

Actually I kind of hint at a Min7b5 in one tune when we go from CMaj7 to F#Min to F#Maj and I use a flat 5th to move to the root of F# Min - the chords are softly played on the one and let ring so I what I play doesnt clash too strongly later in the bar. Any old excuse to introduce to dissonance in my own "wish I could play jazz" style :D

Q, if you're playing a Maj7 chord and you play locrian mode starting on the 7th are you actually playing locrian or are you just extending the major scale... and does it actually bloody matter?!

Hmm, I'd say you're just extending the major scale.

I don't suppose so ;)

Hmm, I'd say you're just extending the major scale.

Yeah, so would I - since it will sound so over the Maj7 chord

In which case, no cant say I ever use locrian 'properly' either, shame, must write some thing with a min7b5's in tehre and persuade the guys to play it.. muscial or not I shall play locrian!

the most exotic we ever get is the odd diminished or augmented - and even then it's not usually required to play a line that has enough notes to really qualify as being of a scale. i usually find myself using a couple of chord tones... aah the life of a humble bass player...

In my old band we had a song which was built on the Locrian mode. Nice and dark but still quirky. Check it out here:

It's called Kleenex btw.

But I wouldn't. :D
I personally think Locrian is great for metal (although I prefer Phrygian) and AFAIK metallica uses Locrian alot

Ok, cool. I don't claim to know much (anything) about metal, really :)
