Thumbs up 1/2 size soft case from Gollihur

I know that not many people opt for 1/2 size basses, but I have one, and found myself in need of a new case for it. They are not easy to come by, and certainly not cheap.

Yesterday I received a GEWA half size padded bass case http://www.gollihurmusic.com/product/2050-UPRIGHT_BASS_PADDED_BAG_1_2_AND_1_4_SIZE.html that was recently added to Gollihur Music's online catalog.

It fits my bass like a glove. It is quite a bit heavier in weight than I expected, but it is very sturdy Cordura, and well padded, which is what I wanted. (The photos appear a much lighter blue, but in fact it is a dark navy.)

It's far easier to put on and take off, compared to my previous cheapo case, as the double zipper allows much easier access, yet still provides a secure closure at the bottom. (The old one required a good bit of luck getting the stand end through the bottom hole before pulling the case up the rest of the way, had only two handles, a loose fit, most of the zippers had failed, it was cumbersome and wasn't very good protection for the instrument.)

The zippers, handles and straps all seem to be high quality, well attached, and reasonably well placed for a variety of people and carrying options. It sports two big pockets on the back, one small, and one bow pocket on the front, with a thin strip of light trim at the top of each to aid locating them in dim lighting. (I think using reflective trim would be even better) I especially appreciate the little Velcro anchor pads on the big 'D' handles on each side, and the widely adjustable, removable trio of padded carry straps, with sure-lock clips, and plenty of d-rings. I like the idea of the back-pack style straps, but tonight I found it most convenient to use the non-slip padded shoulder strap over my right shoulder and my right hand on the front neck handle, giving good balance and a sense of security.

The only drawbacks I see at this time are the heavy weight, and the placement of the large hard-grip handle on the non-zipper side, which prevents safely standing the cased instrument on that side (left side down, bridge away from you, case zipper up). Perhaps I can get used to carrying it and setting it down the other direction, but being able to set the instrument into the opened case, on that side, then wrapping and zipping the case, seems most convenient. It also seems logical that carrying the instrument with the long zipper side up is less likely to result in zip-failure accidents. (I may end up opting to simply remove that particular handle, unless I find it indispensable after some more usage.)

All in all, I call this a very good buy! I've had occasion to order a few items from Gollihur in the past, and must say that they are very good to deal with, and ship safely and promptly. I ordered at nearly midnight on Thursday, they shipped on Friday, with delivery early the following Wednesday. At $155 including shipping, this was a sizable purchase for me, but the clearly superior protection it affords my instrument makes it well worth it.

I hope someone finds this information useful.
