1/2 size vs. 3/4 size

I've read several posts about how a 1/2 size bass can become "confining" over time to a player. I was just wondering why some of you think this is true? In my experience it has been the opposite that has happened, I have very small hands and on a 1/2 size bass I can pivot easier lower on the fingerboard than I can on a 3/4 and shifting is definately easier. Perhaps I'm just weird?

1/2 size basses are limiting in volume for sure, which can be an issue if you play acoustically a lot -- really a problem in an orchestra. Also, there are a lot fewer 1/2 size basses made, so the chances of getting a good one are less. Getting around a 1/2 size bass will certainly seem easier as the string length isn't a whole lot longer than a Slab and the body is less likely to be in your way.

Lisle Atkinson and his wife Karen Atkinson each play 5/8 basses.
