If you want a compact bass but want a more common string length, try the Czech-ease. Moving down the bridge will greatly affect the sound and response in a negative way.

You are moving the bridge further from center and closer to the bottom edge of the bass (obviously) so it the top won't move as much (less volume, loss of lows).
