1585 Gasparo da Salo / Excellent Film

Posted a few days ago to YouTube... This could easily be filed under "music" for the wonderful Martinsson concerto, or "bassists" for the wonderful playing of Dan Styffe, or even "recordings" because of the wonderful production. But since the picture is so gorgeous on this video I just found, I wanted to post it under "basses" because you can really see and hear this magnificent 1585 Gasparo da Salo instrument.

YouTube - ‪Double Bass Concerto - Rolf Martinsson‬‏

The sound and cinematography in this short film are breathtaking with many good views of the bass. Don't let this video play through your computer speakers; grab some nice headphones and dig in. Enjoy.

How interesting that Jack Fallon was one of the previous owners. Although originally a Canadian he spent a lot of time in the UK and in the sixties was a player in a British 'trad' jazz band as well as running a busy entertainment agency. I wonder if he played trad on this bass?

Here's some additional footage of Styffe, Martinsson and the bass; not nearly the production quality of the first video, but I thought I'd post it here.

YouTube - ‪Komponist møter solist‬‏

Unlike the other, it's not in English and there are no subtitles. Still, another good look at the whole package.

The bass is now owned by a subsidiary of a Norwegian banking consortium that loans instruments to orchestra players and soloists in Norway:

Dextra Musica - Sparebankstiftelsen

honest question, no negativity intended:

is this considered a good sound? i ask, because i watched this video with great anticipation for hearing an old italian bass, which i haven't yet had the privilege of hearing.

i think the orchestra sounds great. technically speaking the composition is good, but it's not my style (there are aspects that sound very hollywood-esque to my ear), but i am not all that wowed by the player's command of the piece or the sound of the instrument itself (which may be due to the player's technique), especially compared against other prominent soloists (ibragimov, quarrington, etc.) whose videos are readily available on youtube.

i mean no offense whatsoever; merely curious. the bass is extremely pleasing to the eye, and as far as the soloist is concerned, i have heard that mr. styffe is held in high regard, and i realize the video is of a dress rehearsal and not the actual performance.

but little (other than the instrument's patina and the high-quality/editing of the video) is resonating with me here. is there something i'm missing?
