17 years old, just outa high school, bass guitarist of 3 years, cellist of 9 years

wanting to take up the double bass....mainly jazz, but also interested in doing some orchestral/chamber stuff...

Where do i start? buying a bass? crappy beginner bass, or mid market bass? can i get one for both jazz and orchestral, or do most ppl who do both have 2? teacher? shuld i find a bass guitar teacher who also teaches upright? or pay for extra lessons or what? any people been in similar situations, im imagining it will be a fairly easy transition.

Read through the newbie threads at the top of each db forum, get a teacher that plays upright and uses a bow, and be patient.

Don't expect the tranisition to be easy - you are talking about two very different instruments. DB is much more demanding physically, so get a good teacher (read: someone who primarily plays DB rather than electric) and get your technique in order. You should consider starting with a rental bass before investing in your own.

Have fun!
