Did you find it hard switching to only two strings? |

So what kind of cardboard is the body made from? And does the bridge contact the body, or is the body just like "wings" added to the neck? I'd like to try building something like it - I'd say for a laugh, except it sounds good enough to use seriously! - so if you're willing to give more details that would be great.
Is it opening up as you play it ? |

I assume it is better to use aged, rather than new, cardboard with the best choice being old boxes that were used for moving vinyl jazz LPs. Correct?
By the way, is it a D or E-flat neck? |

_ this cardboard box bass isnt a replacement for my electric 4 string, the 2 string'd bass has limitations.. but damn'd fun indeed!
>>So what kind of cardboard is the body made from?
_ its a light weight corrugated box, strudy but not heavy.
>>And does the bridge contact the body, or is the body just like "wings" added to the neck?
_ the bridge is "floating" via string tension.
_ the neck in is 3 pieces and doesnt touch MOST of the face-body.
>>Is it opening up as you play it ?
_ i used clear duct tape to keep it closed.
Is it European or Chinese cardboard? I hear the latter is not as good as the former. How many plies?
_ the box was from a bathroom cabinet that i bought at Target store, probably Chinese.
>>I assume it is better to use aged, rather than new, cardboard with the best choice being old boxes that were used for moving vinyl jazz LPs. Correct?
_ i think that stiff fresh new cardboard may resonate better than ageing cardboard, but i simply dont know.
>>By the way, is it a D or E-flat neck?
_ the gauge of the weed whacker twine dictated the tuning .095=A and .080=D
_ the bridge is flat to match the flat solid oak-flooring neck.
>>are you using it with an amp? Little piezo pickup in there maybe? Please tell me that lovely sound isn't helped by electronics...
I broke away the casing of a $2 Radio Shack Science Project Buzzer and hooked the 2 wires to a common guitar jack... i duct taped my pickup to the inside of the body between the bridge and neck.
its plugged into a CRATE bass amp.
i've done 3 gigs with it and its falling apart at the bottom...
my next one will have a peg leg stand attached to the bottom
but i'm searching for another perfect box.

| | | | That's my friend Chris...we just did a video with me playing my upright along with his Boxbass...and the thing really does sound good! He's also an amazing electric fretless player. The Boxbass is cool, it does take a little getting used to for an upright player, the string tension is MUCH looser, but as you can see from his first video, once you get going on it it's pretty neat... |

| | | | I should also mention that he didn't really amplify it all that much, it's pretty resonant considering it's a CARDBOARD BOX! Still you'd need a little boost playing with a bunch of guitars or whatever. |

So how about this.... you take a series of road gigs, but you travel without a bass, and you have to procure the raw materials for the daily instrument in each port of call, and construct it before downbeat. Scary... but no moreso than trying to fly with a bass. |

"and on bass, ladies and gentelman, with a pizzabox, broom handle and discarded brassiere: MacGuyver!"
