2009 ISB Convention, Who's Here?

Hey all, Gary and I are just getting ready for bed and the start of the convention tomorrow. We have a small booth right across from the registration booth and would love the opportunity to meet any TB'ers!

We took a quick walk around tonight to see some of the other exhibitors and friends...some amazing basses here to be seen.

We started a blog to chronicle our experience and to help bring the show to you if you cant be here. Some Pics are already up to put some faces to the names you hear about so much. Madeline Crouch has put so much work into this and I know she's going to be a busy lady this week...so I have to tip my hat to her for her hard work and dedication. I don't think this is in violation of the CUP as the site is not selling anything...just trying to bring the show to you! Check out http://blog.uptonbass.com

Be sure to stop by and say hello!

Hey Eric!

Please go by Jean Auray's booth (next to David Gage) and check out the bass he just made for me. I haven't seen it/played it yet, because I am going to Lyon to pick it up in July—so you can play my bass before I do!

Let me know what you think . . .

Good luck at the Convention and have loads of fun. Wish I was there

I'll be there, but only Friday night and Saturday. This work stuff keeps getting in the way of my life.

Hey guys...This has been quite a week so far. I have yet to finish a conversation because I keep running into so many friends, clients and inquirers. The highlight of my convention so far was attending the set by Nilson Matta, the great Brazilian jazz bassist. Fabulous and joyful! I told him afterward that I arrived stressed, but I was leaving happy, and he gave me a big hug. Those Brazilians!

There are a lot of great basses here, and the response I've gotten from the players to my new bass has been fantastic. This includes a private recital by Mark Dresser on the bass. WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A lot of people really got what I was trying to do, though the judges did not. Oh, well...

Monday afternoon, after getting up at 5AM, 5 hours in the truck, setting up, and probably 3 miles of walking to get around this gorgeous campus, Ken Smith and I got drafted into a golf game with the Cincinnati boys. Well, here I will publicly eat crow, as I disbelieved Ken's boasting about his golf prowess. He kicked my ass! Fortunately, I have many, many excuses, and a lightning storm put me out of my misery after only six holes. But I digress...

It was great fun hanging with Lonnie and Wendy, Forester, Ike, and many other TB'ers (especially Craig Regan, who has become a hero of mine. Hey, who do you know who builds a beautiful bass from scratch, teaching himself in the process, because he wants his kid to have a good instrument?! Kudos and props, CT).

Because this ISB is the closest to home of any I've been to, this has been overwhelming because there are so many folks here that I know and care for. What a trip!

More later...

The concerts, or recitals, are special. Since the musicians are basically playing for their peers, the performances seem more intimate and sincere. The venues are tiny and devoid of any large corporate sponsorship banners. It would be easy to go to the convention just to see the musical performances alone, weather you are a bass player or not.

The basses are truly amazing. There must be well over 100 basses on display and most vendors encourage you to try them out. Think of any maker, past to present, chances are you will find an example there.

Every time I saw Arnold he was talking to someone new, so, I had to practically wait in line just to say "hello". He had a nice walnut bass build project on display, which was a treat to inspect and a recently restored Panormo school bass, that sounded terrific. His restoration skills are, as you can imagine, top notch.

If you like the double bass, you should go to this convention.

A really great ISB!

I caught an amazing performance by Brazillian jazz bassist Nilson Matta! I think he's absolutely the happiest bass player I've ever seen and talked with!

The luthiers and shop owners are especially friendly and helpful (yes, they wanted to sell me expensive stuff...but they were still really, really nice folks). Everyone was great, but Volker Nahrmann, Mike & Linda Shank, the Cinncinati Bass Cellar guys, and the Martin Bass luthiers were the most fun to talk with and were having a really great time. And I wonder how many of these guys really expect to sell a lot of basses this year?

Rob Nairn did a heck of a job with all the planning for this! Thanks Rob!

Oh, and my bluegrass band Murphy's Junction is playing Saturday evening at 7:00 on the plaza of the Palmer Museum (right next to all that construction mess you see between the Pasquerella Center and the Pavillion Theatre--right near the lion's paws). It's not an ISB event, but just happened to be scheduled on the last day of the convention. I'll be playing my orange Eberle plywood, so stop by and listen for a bit and wave (just don't throw anything)...

Hi Folks! I am still asking someone . . . anyone . . . to go by Jean Auray's booth (next to David Gage) and play the bass that he has made for me. I am not picking it up until the middle of July . . . so I have not seen it, touched it, heard it, or smelled it.

If anyone finds it in their heart to go by and play it, maybe even take a picture to post here (just so I know that he actually built it), I would be forever grateful.

(Ed Fuqua says he put a scratch in it, but he ain't there.)

Any takers? It should be a pretty nice instrument.
