30's Kay or 60's King?

There are no badges or labels on this bass, just a penciled serial number 45xx on the inside back. According to online resources this would make it either a Kay from '39 or a King/H.N. White bass built in the mid-60s. I'm leaning towards Kay, because the H.N. White basses appear to have had stainless steel tuning gears, according to their literature. I'd appreciate any opinions.

Definitely not a King, totally wrong shape.
Kay C- or O- model most likely, though I've not got my eye in on either of those Gamba shapes. Most likely one of those.
The tuners look a bit weird, but (though its hard to see) the engraved logo looks like a Kluson one.. I think. Actually the more I look the more it does look Kay.

I better wait until Molly Kay chimes in here...

I'll look a bit harder too.

Thumbs up

1939 Kay C-1.

Has the Kluson tuners from that time period stamped on the outside, slot head screws, paste on volutes, correct color, double pin stripe…it’s a Kay. The penciled serial numbers are very typical with no label and no other marks.

Enjoy!
