3rd F-Hole

Goodday All, my teacher brought in her gorgeous 350 year old Italien bass last night to show me and wow it's phenomenal! it is unknown who the maker is, she thinks at one point in time it was a student bass due to the finish, and right behind the bottom of the fingerboard was a 3rd small F-Hole...she says it's highly unusual and doesn't know exactly why it was done, her F-Holes are also a bit smaller then the average bass, she thinks they may have done that to give a little more volume...anybody have any theories ? or have any of you encountered this before ? maybe i'll go home after work with my butchers knife and carve me a bass!!

Didn't some viols have two c-holes and a rose (round soundhole with fancy carving)? That could be a possible inspiration.

Yes, some viols did have that round hole that plimka mentions. Any chance of a picture?

Poellmann made a bass with one of those, it's in the " gallery" under "Special Basses".

And +1 one a picture
