So that you get a bass that feels great and sounds like crap? Go for the sound first; if the bass is too hard to play or needs to much in repairs or is out of your price range, THEN you see where you can go from there.

"Hurting yourself" is more a result of bad physical approach than it is bass size.

I'm a noob to DB last summer and had a rented 4/4 for about six weeks before buying a 3/4.

The 3/4 sounds much better due, no doubt, to some combination of the many possible factors.

I know, I know. My main point was to the OP to say that in my experience the 3/4 sounded better. Then I had to spoil it by saying nonsense.
