I am looking for smaller 3/4 or a 5/8 size bass with sloping shoulders like this one. $1500 to $3000 price range. Any suggestions?

I have and have had several Basses with slightly smaller dimensions. The Bass listed here only shows the upper bouts and string length as being slightly less than average. Still, I think it's just a slightly smaller 3/4 with sloping shoulders. Get the Top length if you can from the bottom saddle to the tip touching the neck heel. |

It is a very comfortable bass partly because it feels smaller than one would think from the dimensions. The sloping shoulders help. Lighter than my other 2 basses as well, about 21 pounds (compared to about 24/25 for my Czech hybrid and my Wilfer 5-string). Easier to carry, easy to play and cheap enough so I don't worry too much about where I take it. My Huntington is the bass I take most places.
Acoustically, it has a full sound, doesn't sound small, but of course nowhere near the smoothness and evenness of the Wilfer. You only notice wolfy spots with the bow, couldn't tell with pizz, but they are there.
Nice wood, finish, overall looks very good. The workmanship is fine for the price range, but lacking compared to what you find in the 5-10k range (like old Juzeks). Look inside and you see some uglier glue spots, I pulled out a piece of Chinese newspaper that got glued in there. Outside is finished very well.
Great value for most purposes. This is the bass I play the most and smaller size is one of the reasons. However, if you want a really good bass for classical playing you have to dig much deeper into your pocket than this. Look for the solo Poellmann in the classified, but that already a totally different price range.

The string length ain't gonna be 40.5 and it's gonna be larger but worth it. |

the measurements of the "Huntington" are real close to my 'unlabeled' Dual Joy (recently identified by my luthier) and the string length is 41". I'd say mine would be considered a 'small' 3/4. I love this instrument like crazy!

It fits her very well for now- as she is 5"2 or so. Are there other US dealers of this Dual Joy bass besides Lemur? |
