It looks like it was made to be a 5-string, but the 3 tuners are on the bass side which is different than most 5-string basses I've seen. This means the heaviest string has to make the sharpest bend to get to the peg.
All Baroque music so lots of low D's.

| | | | I agree; it was hard to hear him. I missed the first 15 minutes. Did he play something, a duet? with the recorder player? I forget her name but she was impressive. Her top of the line instruments, made in Germany, only cost $500 a piece--new! |

The recorder player was extremely impressive, but I don't care how much a recorder costs, IT'S OUT OF TUNE!!!!!! :-)

Can you elaborate on winding the B string on the E capstan? Do you mean over the capstan?
Changing the subject, did you see the final pics of my "Jake DeVillers" Model bass stand? |

Instead of running the bottom string up to the first tuner capstan on the left, bypass it and put the string through the hole of the next capstan up. A little forethought with regards to the alignment of where the string comes off to head for the nut slot and away you go.
Its easier to do than to describe...I'll try and take a photo for you. |

Paul, if you have a moment, would you tell us (me?) a little about this bass, that my friends at A440 in Chicago now have? Thanks.

Got it on the spelling. Jake de Villiers. Thanks. My mother spent a lot of time at the Villiers' growing up in Louisville. In fact, she practically lived at the Villiers. But I digress.
Do you suggest any specs for the nameplate? Brass? Plastic? NOT! Can we get creative on this one? I'm thinking maybe stamping the name into the wood, as is done for bows. And what the heck? I am making another one since I have the pieces cut for a second. I can even fashion a production number/date stamp somewhere.
I can't seem to find the way to posting a pic here. Let me work on it. I see you other guys do it all the time. |

Now for fine tuning.......is there supposed to be a space between de and Villiers? I see it both ways. One of the directors I play for is a De Carlo, not DeCarlo, not de Carlo and certainly not deCarlo.
I present the Jake deVillers Model Upright Bass Stand. No. 001, 2010. |

There is a space between the 'de' and the 'Villiers' - it doesn't show in my forum name because there isn't enough room for it.
