5 string trial

Hello Folks,
Looks like a great forum, reminds me of
"The Bottom Line" of yore. Anyone in the
Worcester Ma USA area have a Wordsmith
Associates Bulgarian 5 string upright bass
I could try out? I'm thinking of buying one.
Does anyone have experience with the
Bulgarian basses? Any help appreciated.

I know that silversorcerer has owned one along with a couple other guys, but I can't remember if any of them tried the 5 string model. The basses are somewhat debated, and they have rather wide necks as well as very heavy (solid) construction from thick tops and backs. Most of use woudl knwo them as "Bob G bulgarians, since the Wordsmith is kind of passe' as far as Bob's operations and legal identities go.

Thanks very much for the reply, Yes it's the Bob G
bulgarian I'm interested in. I'd love to know if anyone
has one I could check out. Any opinsions would be
appreciated. I'm currently chasing an Englehart 4 string
to rent, but really want to hear the five string.

I can't help you up there in Massachusetts, but I really am enjoying my carved bass that I got from Bob. If you want a good 5-string for a small price, you can't beat one these, IMO. I find the neck and FB quite comfortable, much more so than my old czech 4-string. Mine is the larger 7/8-4/4 size. It plays pretty easily and sounds great.

Great input SS, thanks very much. I looked at a nice
King Moretone 4 string that a Luthier in the area has
available and have been going through the huge amount of
info available in this excellent forum. Seems this search
might take a little longer than I thought, but I think it
will be worth the effort. I'm going to rent for a while and
see if I can get down to Bob's place sometime to play a 5
string. I figure I'll give it at least a couple of months.
I'm sure that I'll have more questions as I move along.
