Unlike that Just for Men hair dye commercial, there is play for Mr. Gray.

I'm 56. Not a problem.

Good luck.

Starting Late

No. You'll be very disappointed with yourself if you are 60 and still not starting yet.

You answered your own question...Now go out and get together with some others of similar ability. Play whatever genre you can or want to and it will be even more fun. Just think how good you'll be at 70!

Maybe 55 isn't as good an age to start as 16 but you will have fun and progress quickly if your bass is set-up right, you get some instruction, you learn the fingerboard, you practice, and you take care of and listen to your body (i.e. don't hurt yourself). I started last year at age of 55 and have been having a blast playing straight-ahead bluegrass (not exactly Ron Carter kind of stuff ). I mostly try to support the other musicians, keep it simple, and go for good timing and tone. I have even had 5 or 6 paying gigs but I'm not gonna quit my day job quite yet .

Double Bass - Less expensive than a red convertable, less complicated than a new wife.

I'm 49 and just got back in to playing bass 3 yrs ago after not playing for 28 yrs. I'm having more fun than I've had in a long time.

Go for it.

Get a good teacher, I spent 3 years with a less than than adiquate teacher. After three lessons with my new teacher, issues that I've been trying to solve for 12-18 months are fixed and my sound went from un-listenable to tolerable.

Just jump in when you get the jones for it .....

I hope 56 is not to late to start learning. I started at 44 and I hope I will still be learning at 56. Do get a teacher though. I think that is a big plus for a beginner at any age.
