Advice on buying a new bass

I have been playing a 50's Czech bass for too many years now. I dont play for a living but play local gigs a few times a month. Bluegrass by the way. It may have once been a nice bass but now is no better then a cardboard box! Its January and for a poor hillbilly that means w2s are coming soon!!! Wondering if someone could recommend a quality affordable bass or maybe a luthier in the Galax Virginia area. Thanks in advance

Hi Andy,

Don't know about close, but you're less than three hours away from Fretwell Bass in Staunton, VA, where you can see and play (and hear) a bunch of basses in one stop. It's well worth the drive.

fretwell is worth the trip. good people and lots of nice sounding basses.

Bob Beerman's Bass Violin Shop is in Greensboro NC. He usually has a good assortment of basses. His website is www.bassviolinshop.com. He is a great luthier and a nice man to talk to. Well worth the trip. Mike

I just looked at his website and it looks like he has 20 basses in stock from $1500 to $18000. Some are significantly reduced in price.
