American Standard Serial Numbers

I've found two sources on the net for AS serial numbers. Roger Stowers Kay Bass site on the AS numbers info is most direct and complete looking. The American Standard site is sketchy by comparison. Who to believe, then?

Which AS site are you talking about? The White Co. site's no.s aren't as accurate as americanstandardbass.com. I don't know about Stower's site, but Kip Martin and I, among others, did quite a bit of work on this and even the White co.'s owner told me it's more accurate.

The AS site is done with much more careful and extensive research. Kip tells me that there has been quite a bit of information discovered recently and to stay tuned for a site update soon.

I'm confused. According to Martin's, which I believe is the American Standard link above, the numbers jump fro 600 in 1941 to 1560 in 1946. It looks like they made 70-100 basses a year, give or take a few, so where are all the numbers between 600 and 1560? I have 1194 and according to Sowers and Jerry Fretwell, in was made in 1940. I don't know what to think, but until I know different, I'm sticking with their info. I sent Martin my info and pix some time ago when I met him playing in our area, but he never posted anything. I have heard the same story from several others on different sites. Maybe he is just too busy. I did hear that he recently moved to Florida from Va. but that's all I know.
