I had the great pleasure of meeting Steve Swan in San Francsico a couple of weeks ago, and seeing his shop, which has some very fine quality basses there are very reasonable prices.
I was particularly interested in a 5/8th bass by Andrew Pitts, an American maker living in Prague (
http://www.doublebass.eu), and Steve was kind enough to bring the bass down to LA for me to try (and to make available, at my house, for anyone in the area who would want to check it out).
The bass is a very "singing" bass - great solo or jazz instrument, with a substantial bottom. While I'm not sure it's for me, a)it's worth knowing this maker's work; and b) knowing Steve. More on the bass at:
