Well, I have another option now, as my bass professor told me he is able to acquire a fully-carved Chinese bass for $1750 with bow, plus $200 for setup. He said that it costs around $2500 retail. Does anybody know if there is a CCB category for fully-carved basses, or is it most likely of a decent quality?

But here is the burning question: would it not be wise to buy a carved bass for the purpose of using in a bluegrass band that will be performing primarily outside throughout the course of the summer? Would I just be asking for warping and cracks?

I was in a very similar situation as you two years ago. The closest bass shop to me would be at least 300 miles away. So I did a bunch of reading / research and decided to buy an Upton Laminate.

Only I really wanted a Gamba, but I still chose Upton despite violin being the only shape available at the time. And it was the smartest decision I ever made. Good bass, good price.

And I've come to prefer the violin shape over time. And it's easier to carry.
Where did you buy your Upton? Did you buy it in Canada?

thanks,

Fred

Thumbs down I wouldn't if I were you . . .

Mongo - you answered your own question - re: playing out-of-doors most everyone will steer you away from taking a carved outside - many, many/most bluegrassers prefer/play laminates/plys because they endure the elements better as well as for the bg sound . . .

Is it Chinese - or - CCB -

There is a definite difference . . . if it's new at that price it's gotta be CCB - don't go there -

Good Luck!

I have not seen or played it, but my professor recommends it; I've heard good things about it for a third party as well. Supposedly it doesn't start at $1750, but it is significantly discounted for the school.

I appreciate the feedback about the carved bass outside. Is it humidity or temperature or both that is the problem?

At any rate, I'll probably stick my search to plywoods if this carved is not a good idea for outdoor playing.
