Anyone stand up but use a bass stand

Hi

I am a stool player, occasionally I stand but never got the knack for it and only stand on really jazzy lines, usually never in my orchestras. But I noticed a while back someone said something about using a bass stand on a gig. I played around with the upton one I have and it didn't seem too bad but I was still a little uneasy about it. Are there any bassists that stand and use a bass stand to play?

Not that I've ever in my life seen.

I just did it last month, on a borrowed bass. You can probably see in somewhere on Youtube, under "Amy Hanaiali'i", if you're interested.

I did not care for it much. I did it to make it easy for the sound guy, and it was two songs for a TV show. It was really strange, playing an immobile bass. Kind of felt like the life was sucked out of it.

I built a stand that could probably be used this way, but that was not my original intent when I built it. The stand supports the bass leaning sideways in the approximate position that it would be in if supported by a standing player. It would be really useful for someone switching between EBG and DB in the same set, which I sometimes do. If you are interested, PM me and I'll get you some photos of it. It wasn't hard to build. You just need a drill, a saw, a round wood rasp and a source of predimensioned maple. Home Depot or Lowes usually has it. I also put a sort of safety belt on the stand that secures the bass in there so it can't easily be knocked off the stand. So far the worst that it has withstood were two wrestling dogs that ran into the bass and really gave the whole assembly a good jostling around. All was well and nothing fell over, so it worked.

I stumbled across this diagram of how to make a bass stand for playing:

I'm quite sure I would never want to do that.

I really would never want to either. I just found that link. Unless you're disabled, I really don't see the point.

My Ergo EUB is on a stand. I find it actually takes more effort to play because of it. Something about the way you relate to the bass you hold it it up, but it seems to help you as well. I only noticed because of my EUB.
I am pretty used to the stand now, but it does take more effort than double bass.

While quite inventive I can imagine this thing looks absolutely terrible when assembled.

Older players may remember the "Redi Rest" Stand. They were were made especially for playing while the bass was in the stand. I've got more detailed photos if anyone is interested. It was made from cast aluminum and folded up when not in use.

Playing with bass on a stand

Never cared for doing it myself (tried it but felt less attached), however I saw Milt Hinton almost always playing with his for many years.
