I have a stool like this- It can adjust up pretty high. I use it when my back starts to hurt.

There really is a lot to be said for having someone look at how you play. This has been mentioned already. I can't add much ore to the discussion.

If I set my music stand too low or try to read off of the piano player's chart off to my right side I'll end up pinching my neck. So how I position myself and my bass will dictate if I end up with a pinch.

I am experimenting with both French and German bows at this early stage of my playing and am aware of different stresses on my body with each bow.

I do know that I am not as fit as I was a few years ago. I never suffered aside from muscle strains the way I do now and do attribute that in part to a lack of overall fitness. At 42 I am now going back to the gym after a year of not going, preceeded by a year of going 3-4 times per week.

Be real careful with your backs Bass brothers!! I'm 29 years old and have had 2 lower back surgeries!!! I had my L-5 S-1 Herniated and had them cut off pieces of the disk to relief pain in my right lower back. My problem now is weight![lollollollol That's another forum!!] Try to keep your pelvis aligned so that your spine is in perfect shape. Putting to much pressure on one foot for a long time can mess your back up also. Remember to move around while playing and try not sitting to long either!!!

I recommend a change in diet. Increase your intake of neutral digestible fibre, whilst reducing your total metabolisable energy - you could achieve this by increasing your soy ration and steer away from molasses additives. This would have the added bonus of increasing your protein intake.

Also try a little more excercise - get out of your farrowing crate more often.

If you can play the bass all day going up and down in a NYC elevator, your back will never hurt again.

You seem pretty ready to slag down a lot of folks before you have even found a teacher. Here's a word to look up for your youthful vocabulary: philistine.

I respectfully suggest that you may do better to put your energies into finding a pro teacher first, then worry later about what they aren't giving you, the value (or not) of marijuana, chiropractic, sun spot activity, acupuncture, etc. Just my 2c...

I'd think the reach you are dealing with playing with the bass so high would look mechanically inefficient to you.....so practice regularly in front of a large mirror. Problems you can't pinpoint by feel are often very obvious when you see them.
