I think the first one is "OK" ...in a sort of modernist vibe - but the second one is just plain ugly!

Funny, I have the opposite reaction!

I didn't go much for the scroll on that cornerless bass video, sort of reminded me of a wayward cleavage at oscar night ...

The second one looks like a gamba or a cello though, since it has pegs instead of tuners.

Look how deep the strings are into the nut on the first one!

Where did you find the pic of the first one from this post? Just curious, I have a Kay that is painted gold just like that.

It is from an Englehart bass. The scroll ends are not real wood, they are composite pasties.

Yeah, and they are known to fall off easily as well.

Unhappy Butchered but not dead...

A famous Philly Repairman cut this original 3-string Scroll about 30-40 years ago to fit a mechanical extension. The Scroll will get fully restored when the Bass goes into restoration.

A beautiful original Scroll turned ugly to be made beautiful again one day.

When it was new? It was new about 200 years ago give or take.. Customize it? You should not cut a Scroll to put an extension on. It was a fairly common practice years ago but it defaces the Bass. Fitting the Extension is more work granted but it should be done the way that it preserves the Bass most.

No, I don't have the Extension. It didn't work that well to begin with. I took it off and made the new Nut the same day I got the Bass. A former student or Riccardi (former owner) has the Extension. I prefer the Chromatic/fingered Ebony extensions so either way, that Extension was coming off. Even Riccardi was disturbed when his repairman cut the Scroll to install the extension from what I have heard.

The differing perspectives of 15 and 50 year olds!

I admire your restraint Ken!
