Bass for 1000$ or Less

Sooo ... I go to a conservatory in New York for jazz and next year I will be living out of the dorms probably in an apartment way uptown (135-150th).. I was thinking that maybe I can get a cheap spare bass to practice at in my apartment while I keep my New Standard at school..

My price range is from about 1000ish (maybe a little higher)..

Is this possible?

Does anyone have a bass like this for sale?

What should I expect in-terms of quality?

Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

In the TB classifieds, there is a guy somewhere in New Jersey selling a Strunal 50/4 for $1000. That's a good bass at a much lower than new price.

Another option is to look at an EUB for the home. That way you actually have a different functioning instrument, not just the same as your New Standard but less. You could move the EUB around more easily and get different kinds of sounds from it and do different kinds of gigs. Practicing scales, songs, lines, rhythm etc. on it with pizz technique will still yield results when you play your acoustic. And you can practice late at night with headphones and it won't take up as much space in what I assume will be a small dorm room.

I'd second the EUB recommendation. And it might come in handy when you're trying to take a cab or public transport to a gig.

Try to find one with a scale length that matches your New Standard, which should be fairly easy.

I use my BugBass much more than my old American Standard because of transporting ease, lack of feedback and minimal stage space.

deals on double basses can be had on craigslist. if you keep your eye on it, you might find something in your price range that is in good shape. search for 'upright bass.' you can also search for 'double bass' or 'string bass,' but as you can imagine these searches yield a lot of overlap with ads you're not looking for.

or search the forums. I think there are already 50 threads about this.

On the very same page as this post, I'm seeing the ad for bassesonline.com. My understanding is that this stock of basses is located in New York City.

Some really good values there, mostly within your price range. You might be able to cherry pick in person. Yes, it'll need a setup, but ANY bass in that price range is gonna need a setup.

Buy the best you you can afford, keep it in good shape and use it as your practice/backup. When you go to sell it, your overall costs of ownership just might be around zero.
