A bass called whitey

My friend painted his double bass white. WIll this effect the sound/or value down the road? I pleaded with him not to but, he was determined to paint it anyway!

Depends. What kind of bass is it? And what kind of paint?

Certain BSOs (Bass Shaped Objects) are of such quality (or lack thereof) that their tone doesn't suffer from a paintjob--or being dipped in peanut butter, for that matter.

My '38 Kay was painted black when I bought it. Took some time to get it off, but worth it.

I have an old German plywood that was starting to develop tiny cracks in the finish. It was hardly ever used so I wasn't going to put a lot of cash into it. I lightly sanded and put a coat of white primer in an effort to seal and protect it.

If anything, the bass sounds better than ever and I find myself playing it more.

I once had an idea in painting a tuxedo style suit jacket on my bass, but thought how ridiculous it would look. Well hopefully this "painting of the bass" debaucle will go down as yet another episode in my friends long line of catastrophies. Sorry, did not use spellcheck!
