My guess would be that the maker is an amateur (or an artist?) who didn't have a real bass to use for a pattern, so tried to use a blown up violin pattern instead and modified it accordingly. The scroll looks more like a violin or viola than a bass or cello. That back button has to be one of the biggest I've ever seen and it looks like that neck is so thick that it would be very difficult, if not impossible, to play. It is really a shame considering how much work the maker put into it.
