Bass Maintenance

I just got my 3/4 upright fixed. The neck had come out of the pocket. Is there any thing I need to do in order to prevent this from happening again? I used to just play the bass and store it on its side. I am going to now store it in a corner. What other measures should i do to keep it from happening again and keep it in good health. THanks.

I read your profile; I am not familiar with a "Verona" double bass.

Having the neck "pop" out is not normal, except in basses where the mortice and dovetail never fit well in the first place.

Hope that the fix holds. Standing your bass with the bridge facing toward the corner is always a good idea; unless it falls. I tie mine with a strap, screwed into the wall framing. Just another idea...

Thanks. I guess what I am really looking for is if there is anything I need to do if I am storing it for longer periods and when i'm using it regularly. Do I need to do anything (ie. loosen strings ect.)

No, it should be fine. You don't have to do anything. Just make sure the humidity where you store it is in the 30-45% range.

Did the neck just pop out on its own or was it hit, kicked, dropped, etc.

My dehumidifier broke down and we went away for the week end. When I came downstairs the room was noticeably damp. The neck had come right out of the pocket. It is a cheap Chinese bass Ive had for over 12 years so it held up for a lot longer then I expected it to.

How do I measure humidity?

They'll have a gauge at the hardware store. My level suggestion above is for winter when the heat is on in your house and it gets very dry. In the summer, humidity will be higher, shouldn't be a problem. Of course you don't want mold and mildew...

Did you talk about your bass on the CCB review thread? If not, please do.
