Southwest Strings rents a carved Korean bass that is not too bad, they also sell the same model. The top on the one I tried was quite thick but it seened to be a fairly well made instrument. I did not want to have to maintain a carved bass in Arizona. The humidity going from 6% to 90% in the monsoon season would be a b*tch.
