1. Lifting the bass on and off the arms.

3. The bass didn't sit right, it seemed tippy.
4. The neck of the stand seemed to slip.
5. It seemed to take up more square footage than leaning it in the corner.
6. It's somewhat ugly.

I can take partial blame for numbers three and four, but I was really not able to get it set-up right - the stand has to take some blame too.

I know. I've been around here enough to know that everyone is cranky.

Big time bummer indeed. I think it has to do with the massive costs of buying and owning/maintaining a "real" DB(non-ply). There seems to be a feeling of belonging to an "exclusive" high dollar club that you have to be in to play DB. to bad I'm not in it as I got my 4/4 ply used for $400 But there are definitely allot of good DB TBers out there who don't resort to "snarkism" all the time. But all in all I find the "slab" side to be far less snarky, and more helpfull.
Also a bummer that there is nothing like a "luthiers corner" on the DB side. must have to do with the high dollar thing again, noticed that anytime a question of "how do i do this. . . " comes up the only answer is usually "take it to a luthier, you'll just mess it up". which might be true in allot of cases. . .

But to get back on topic I have an Ingles stand and find it to be very useful. The pads around the arms do have to be changed pretty much right away but other than that it gets my bass off the floor and keeps it safe, it's never come close to falling or being knocked over. you should definitely NOT play the bass in the stand though, I could see this causing all kinds of technique issues.

What are the material options for the Ingles legs padding? I was thinking either that black pipe insulation from Home Depot (but just not sure if it'll cause any damage to the finish) or some type of plastic tubing.

Suggestions?

well I don't think the pipe insulation would hold up much better, isn't it just a dense foam? I used some soft rubber tubing I had laying around and it seems to be holding up ok. I also bent the arms up a bit to make the bass "sit" more naturally and cradle it more securely(before i did it would only sit on the back ply of the bass, sometimes allowing it to slide a little forward).

I have had foam pipe insulation on my Ingles for about 6-months. It is compressed but not torn. Not incredibly durable, but I figure that whenever it tears, I will just snip off a fresh stick of it. It is polyethylene foam, which is not a material that will mar a finish.

The secret of the Ingles stand-- keep the endpin on your bass extended! Leave your endpin at it's regular playing height and raise the stand's bottom supports until they absorb a lot of the weight but the endpin is still resting solidly on the floor. I've had my Ingles stand for over a year, use it at home and at all my gigs, it works great, and I don't have even the slightest dent in the foam support tubing!

That's funny. I experimented with the stand height when I first set up my Ingles, and found it much more stabile with the end pin entirely off the floor. To each his own.
