Bass in Vancouver/Flying in Canada

I'm flying to Vancouver to start a tour this week, and I just found out the $301 I was quoted to ship my bass as air canada cargo is actually $1200, and now I trying to find a back up if I can't fly with mine as baggage.

Anyone know of a (preferably good) bass in Vancouver I could rent from May 23rd - June 11th?

Also, has anyone flown with a bass domestically on air canada recently? A friend told me that despite the new restrictions on size and weight, he always sweet talks his bass on as baggage. I hope this is true!

Thanks,
brian

bobes, one of my students was in van recently and he rented a decent bass from l and m, I'm off to switzerland this week and I just double checked with Air Canada and it is worse for me, I've just hooked up a bass over there, good luck man and give me a ring when you are back in town and we'll go out for some pints

There is a guy who has basses he rents to the Vancouver Jazz Festival. I've played two of them and both are decent. I don't know his name or number but Tuesday afternoon I will be talking to the Jazzfest TD and can get it. You can also talk to him yourself at 604.872.5200 and ask for Eduardo. He's super busy so come to the point fast and tell him you were talking to me (jeff bonny...i'm their lighting designer) and want to know who they rent the upright basses for The Centre from. He may pass you off to the festival rentals person and I don't know who that is. And there is always L&M and you'd definitely want the Hastings St. location. They may actually be less hassle and they always have at least one playable instrument. Their phone is 604.682.5288

I use the foloowing technique when looking for special treatment for a bass as luggage/carry-on -

1) Call Air Canada and ask for the special treatment you desire
2) If you don't like the answer you get, hang up and repeat step one.
3) When an Air Canada employee agrees to your special request gets their name and employee info as a reference.

Communications within Air Canada have deteriorated to the point where nobody seems to know what the rules are. Get an agreement, get a name and don't take no for an answer. If someone quoted you $300, you can be pretty sure you can get someone else to confirm that quote.
