Bass in Weather

i might be living without air conditioning in New York next year.
i own a carved bass

should i be worried?

You should be fine. I'd be more worried about winter in NY with forced heat.

Just keep it out of the sun. If I'm somewhere where sun can't be avoided I throw a white sheet over the bass case (which is black). Yeah, it looks like I'm disposing of a dead body, but the bass stays cool. I used to do the same with my camera cases in the summer. And I totally agree on the humidity issue. Forced air heating is the worst enemy of a wooden musical instrument. If your are still in New York when the heater season cranks up, get a room humidifier or try to get an apartment with steam radiators.

Depending on the age of the bass, you might go through some changes. It took about 6-8 months for mine to get acclimated to the weather here. Be prepared to make a few trips to Gage's until things really settle in. Forced air heating is pretty rare out here, but you should still get a room humidifier for the winter. Good luck.
