Bass from William H. Lee

If any of you attended the TMEA convention this past week, you may have passed by the William Harris Lee booth expecting to only see nice violins, violas, and cellos. Just recently, one of their top cello makers, Gary Garavaglia, decided to make his first bass. The product was great. Though it has a price tag of about $30,000, it sounds very similiar to Jakstadt and Hachez basses. What's really incredible is the fact that this is Garavaglia's first bass. I think that, in the near future, his basses will be in high demand among the pros.

That's a very nice looking instrument. I like the color in the varnish and the model, though I'm not sure it's the most playable shape out there. I'd like to see photos of some details, like the corners and button and scroll...

It's no solo bass, that's for sure, but if you're looking for a powerful orchestral monster, this would work quite well. The upper shoulders must have been 22 inches wide.

All I can say is wow, I walked right by that bass and didn't stop and play it...
There is so much to look at at that convention, I feel like I didn't even get enough time to try out the robertson basses!

That bass is truly beautiful. It's amazing it is the maker's first bass. Looks like he got it right.
