Bass Workshop for High School Beginners

Hi all,

I've been asked to give a workshop to about 5 or so absolute beginners who are interested in playing bass in the jazz bands and concert band at my old high school. I just graduated last year, and there was nobody to take over my spot in the groups so they don't have much in the way of bassists right now.

So, what sorts of things should I show them and address in a limited time? I will have about an hour initially, with a possible opportunity for later sessions. I have good technique, and I feel fairly confident about explaining it to others as I was well-taught. However, when I started taking bass lessons, I had been playing for a year on my own and came from years of violin playing. How should I address the double bass to teenagers who have never played it? I don't want to tun them off of it by making it seem too complicated to bother to learn, and I want them to know how fun and rewarding it can be with commitment.

I'm guessing some of you have done a workshop like this before? Any suggestions/hints/ideas?

Thanks

Hmm. I'd sure include playing recordings of some of the greats that might get 'em going. I'd also stress the versatility of the instrument, i.e., it's place in classical, jazz, bluegrass, folk, etc. You might demonstrate those roles as well. In one hour, you cannot teach them to play and it sounds like they are not even committed yet. So, this is more of a session to help get them hooked. Just my $0.02 While you have them there, teach them proper responses to "Is that a cello?"
