bassesonline.com

Hello everyone,

This is my first post and I'm interested in purchasing a bass. A specific website has caught my eye, bassesonline.com. I know this has been talked about before but all the information seemed to be scattered. I was wondering if anyone could share their success stories and tell me their total price after getting it professionally setup. Thank you for all your help.

Eberle Ply...$950 + shipping (IIRC it was over $200 to ship to Washington State back when gas was $4 a gallon) + cost of having them add an adjustable bridge. Someday I'll get the nut and bridge dialed in and fingerboard planed, but with a little filing on the nut slots it's been playable for a rookie with Ideal's "basic setup. Good tone for a ply with the stock Helicore Orchestra strings (OK, it's not a New Standard, but you're in a whole different price bracket here) ... probably going to either Spiro or EP weichs whenever I get it in for that "pro setup". I'd recommend getting it for $850 without setup and taking it to the luthier of your choice.

BTW, last listing I saw on Ebay he was almost sold out of the laminates so if that's what you're after don't wait too long.

As you said, "this has been talked about before". I don't think it's realistic to expect everyone to retype their previous posts for your convenience. Just type Eberle or Roma into the search function and you will get a ton of info.

Just purchased my first bass at Gollihurmusic.com. Was their Gollihur Classic model made by Englehardt. Bass was under $1100, bag, stand, bow case, a few instructional DVD, and K&K pickups plus shipping brought my total just under $1800.

Took the bass to local luthier and they installed bridge for $25.

The factory strings on it are very tinny sounding, and will shortly be replaced with D'Arrdio's or others about $130.

Luthier suggested I should play the bass, let it get settled in to its new surroundings and then see if I want them to plane or shape the fingerboard. That's about $150. I will probably do that since the strings buzz near the nut.

Rock solid bass and great service from Mark and Bob Gollihur.

I bought a Roma ply from Bassesonline about 3yrs ago. $750 +$150 shipping to AL.
Spent another $200 on fretbord planing & nut & bridge shaping, so I've got around $1100 in it.
Solidly built. Prob a little overbuilt for optimum sound, but its a durable tank.
Ebony board. Sound wise, Id say its equal to any new Englehart, but has a beefier neck.
I got excellent srvice on the sale, just be aware that you will most likely spend extra for a good set up.

Well I have bought two of their basses'. I started with a Eberle ply and it cost 1000.00 + 200.00 shipping. Got a set-up for not much. The bass worked well infact it was or is a work horse of a bass. I then purchased the bass I play now.., A Enesco carved bass. Romanian made about 35 years ago. The price was around 2300.00 or maybe a lil less. Great buy !!! Got a full set-up at Saint Louis Strings for 400.00. With 200.00 shipping. The bass plays great.., has a very punchy mid range tone. Cuts through quite well and is suprisingly loud without the pick-up turned on. Arco is good tone also. Really sweet in the thumb position. The string length is at 401/2 and like I said the bass is a good bass. It deff. is a advanced carved bass. Price should have been round 4000.00 or so . Good buy for me.
Good Luck hunting for "the One"
Peace

In Feb I purchased an Eberle Ply for $950 + shipping with basic setup, which is OK but not great. Subsequent setup was a few hundred $$ from Nick Lloyd in Cinci - New endpin, planed fingerboard + nut, bridge adjusters installed, bridge modified to correct string height variance, and new tailpiece cable installed.

I'm very happy with the bass - full punchy pizz tone, and even though ply, an arco tone that will shake pictures off the wall. Also cannot say enough about Steve's (Ideal Music) tremendous customer service.

But skip the setup and pay $850 + shipping and put the extra $100 towards a good setup by a local luthier. Makes all the difference.

A great bass for the money....

I bought this one from Steve in 2007 and now have it for sale here:

Chicago: fully carved smaller DB *PRICE DROP*

I found Steve and his mom great to deal with and am very please with the bass. The only reason I'm selling is to produce some $$ to purchase another bass. I did have to put a fair amount of money into it to get it set up properly but it was worth the cost and time.

I don't know what Steve has left in the way of basses. This liquidation effort has been going on for some years now.
