bassists and jazz in San Francisco

hi - My wife and I are going to be visiting San Francisco in mid-May. Are there any tips for jazz clubs (maybe not the famous ones like Yoshis, but smaller ones?)

And - any bass stores I should visit?

And/or - any jazz bassists to have lunch with?

thanks,

Craig

I second John Wiitala.

For more eclectic (and or sometimes electric) musical fare - http://www.codalive.com/

Jazz at Pearls is closed.

Monday nights Grant & Green usually has a jam session led by Trumpet Phenom, Mike Olmos. http://www.myspace.com/jazzonmonday Mike usually has some of the best performing musicians in the Bay Area with him.

There is also this seedy bar in the Mission that usually does something jazz on Thursday's http://www.amnesiathebar.com/Amnesia/Contact.html Some of the links are broken on the site, but hopefully they'll have the May calendar up for you to peruse soon.

If you do wish to take in a Yoshi's show, I recommend the one at Jack London Square, Oakland (much more intimate). Unless there is a performer you must see in SF.

If you are on that side of the Bay anyway, stop by the Jazzschool in Berkeley. They also have shows.

Look for performances with Marcus Shelby, Glenn Richman (Bobby Hutcherson Quartet), Dan Feiszli, Sam Bevan (if it's a Latin gig, he most likely has the slab with him), David Ewell, George Ban-Weiss...and more.

Makes me wonder what I am doing trying to learn Double Bass and jazz at all sometimes.

check out Wednesday night at Amnesia in SF for 2 free shows in 1 night!!! they have Gypsy Jazz from 8-10 w/Gaucho. These guys are A-list world class players! from 10-12 is a Modern/Funky/Hardbop set w/Eric Mcfadden Trio or Quartet. These guys are f***in rippers too!

Gaucho......I think I used to hear that group over at the Beach Chalet in Golden Gate Park. Folks, I must say that today in SF was an incredible day. Please visit.

Wiitala is great, probably among the top of the pecking order around here, and there are many more great players as well!

Wish I'd seen this earlier. I was there for business this past week. I did visit Alex Friedman's shop. Seemed like a nice fellow. Tried to sell me on one of these Phil Jones amps. He did have a really nice bow for a measley $1900

I third John Wiitala! Check out a little dive called club deluxe on the corner of haight and ashbury. Everyday except for mondays has some kind of jazz there (usually). It can be a really happening scene over there sometimes. Wednesdays at amnesia after 10 usually features Andrew Emer and he's pretty killin too!

KCSM FM91 has a pretty comprehensive "Jazz Datebook" listing of what's going on the the bay area jazz clubs.
