A. Batchelder & Son Bass

Hey,

Somebody knows something about this bass, I found it on ebay, pretty nice and pricy.

Have somebody played one like that?

I have played that exact bass. It's outstanding. Surprising tone arco, pizz is strong but not overly loud. Bright but still with the richness of an old bass. It plays impeccably and needs nothing.

Interesting to note that the back of the bass is made of pine. Beautiful instrument. It seems rare that a softwood such as pine is used for the back. But I know very little. Wish KSB was around.

Did you like it more than the bass you ended up buying?

No or I would have bought it. It was kinda small feeling. I'm used to a 7/8 bass and the bouts were smaller than I prefer. Arco, especially on the upper strings it was much sweeter than the bass I bought. The bass I bought has much more pizz power at the expense of some of that arco sweetness. A good tradeoff for what I do.

Ha ha ha, yeah good one Ken. No real person could be so dense without trying.

Kendon, what's your opinion on the Batchelder? In my opinion it is a very ugly bass.

I thought it looked pretty cool in person. Just kinda smallish.

Yup read it and weep, at the risk of that you'll end up feeling like Jimmy Stewart's departing sense of reality in Hitchcock's "Vertigo"..........

Damn, I want a Yankee bass someday.

I think it's gorgeous! Going to be in the market soon and that is going to be one of the first basses I'm going to try

Dear God, that's lovely.

Looks like a great deal, for what it is.

I think it looks great. I inquired with Ken about the Batchelder but ultimately worried about having so much invested in it. For someone who wants a small Prescott type instrument (like me, ideally!) I think it looks fantastic.

The scroll on that thing is super bad. Under the bow it is really really sweet. It's a smaller bass so it doesn't have the room rattle of the big Yankee bass but because of that I'd bet it would amplify really well. That Yankee bass tubby low end thing doesn't amplify as well as a bass with a tighter low end.

The sweetest love may come after tasting the most bitter fruit.......I think if I got my hands on this instrument, I wouldn't want to let go.

C'mon, you guys are pulling my leg. Seriously, you really like the looks of this!? "Beauty" is a matter of opinion I guess: how about posting some photos of your ladyfriends? Ha ha ha.

The shoulders look jagged and lopside; the f-holes seem uneven, skinny and ragged; the back of the upper bout looks mismatched; the scroll looks off-balance, skinny and lopsided; and, the finish looks like it was done by an amateur working on a cheap piece of furniture.

That's right, it was made by human hands and not in a factory.
