begginer bass

Hey. I am a total absolute begginer. I need an upright of my own i have been using my schools and im not allowed to bring it home. I was wondering if any knows of any good student basses probably ply-wood or hybrids. Nothing over 2000 that i would be able to find at a local orchestral shop. I would be using it mostly for jazz but still classical.
Thanks

For $2000, you should have some options. Where are you located?

Try reading posts about Shen and Christopher basses in the newbie links. One of them might fit the bill.

You may also want to check out Upton basses. There's a link in the left column. I believe they have a bass within your price range. Do a search of the forum for Upton basses and you'll read some good things about them too.

While I have seen Christopher 300 series hybrids (solid wood top, laminated sides and back) go for right around $2000, given your price range, I think I'd go for either a Shen SB100 or one of the Upton laminate basses. Those are the nicest new basses in that range that I've seen.
