Question beginner: need cheap upright (if thats alright with you)

Hello all, I've lurked over on the other side and just started posting a little more actively

I've been playing electric bass for the past 15 years and for the past few years have been wanting to start learning upright. I want to get creative with bowing the instrument while of course being versatile by learning fingerstyle and whatever other styles there are.

I have a small budget; under a grand, the further under the better. I'm hip to getting what you pay for and appreciate the differences between a poorly made bass, and a well made bass. Right now; however, I'm unsure as to whether it will hold my interest or not. If it is something I won't stick with I'd hate to get stuck with a $5000 piece of furniture.

A few questions.

~Should I go EUB or Double Bass?

~Are there significant differences in terms of playability between the two?

~Other than internet sources where are good places to find used uprights that don't want to pull my pants down? I've considered going to schools or universities that may have unused or unwanted instruments, and seeing if they'd be willing to sell them to me. Thoughts on that? I'm I just taking away a cherished instrument with selfish disregard for countless appreciative students? (sorry....rant)

I'm leaning towards EUB and am taking an interest in a WAV 4. After reading the sticky, concerns of quality come about. I'm wondering if NSD (or whatever sub) are getting the kinks worked out yet. I'm also wondering what else is out there that may be better but in the price range. Also, are there replaceable items on the WAV 4 ie: tuners, bridges etc?

Any words of wisdom are greatly appreciated!

Rent an upright for a few days to get an idea of whether you'd want to put down any more money on one for yourself. After that, go to a store and try out an EUB, then see which one is pulling you the most. If neither pull you, you'll be saving yourself some dough and extra hassle.

Here are the standard Talkbass words of wisdom™:

1.- Get a teacher: at the very least, a teacher will help develop safe technique and should be able to help in your search for a bass.

2.- Read the Newbie links: they saved me time and money when I came here 3 years ago.

3.- Don't buy a cheap bass: it will require hundreds of dollars in setup work.

-Look into renting a bass if you are unsure of your stickability.
