They made a number of instruments sold here under the "Juzek" name, along with other makers. Ken Smith believes that Lang made most of the ply basses for Juzek and possible some of the carved models as well.
You could have a very decent bass there but you should probably have it inspected by a bass luthier to determine its condition. You might want to try posting some quality pictures if possible.
I've seen a couple of Lang cellos around here and they were quite decent entry/intermediate level instruments. |

FWIW, their cellos are quite respected also. |

| | | | Tornblad is a typical but not very common Swedish family name.
The pics are from a Swedish bass repairman's shop repairing two old Benedikt Lang basses at the same time (2001).
One 4/4 and a 3/4.
The repairman had seen many Benedikt Lang basses, but only these two had the name "Tornblad" added.
He has not yet found out who "Tornblad" was.
This 3/4 seemed to be around 100 years old: |

| | | | Benedikt Lang/Tornblad This 4/4 "Benedikt Lang/Tornblad" looked much older than the 3/4 above.
Benedikt Lang (Mittenwald) was a close friend of the bassmaker family Wilfer (Erlangen). They cooperated and made exactly the same models.
You can't see any difference. |

The timbers were great but the workmanship, sound and varnish were very ordinary. The three stop lengths were 42 1/2", 43 1/2" and nearly 44 1/2". One was used and the other two were "loaned' to other orchestras and never returned. I later contacted Benedikt Lang to have a maple neck graft block sent out. It also had lovely figure.
We used to say what a pity it was to have wasted such good wood on such mediocre instruments.
