I just drove 7 1/2 hours each way to buy this bass sight unseen. Risky, but after doing research and getting the story and background of the builder I realized it was a no brainer. David Birkendahl was a well known violin maker in New Mexico back in the 70's and 80's, he has only made several basses. One is used by Art Sheinberg in New Mexico. Unfortunately Birkendahl passed away in the 80s. Long story short I bought this bass for $1,800. It is an amazing fully carved bass, engelman spruce top, flame back and sides. I met the seller in Albaqurque and drove straight to Robertson Violins (an amazing store). The owner couldn't believe the deal I got, and was also impressed with the sound. This bass was killing the basses in the shop that were 40K plus. I need to have a few things done to make her perfect. She ended up in a bluegrass players hand (he sold her to me because he liked his Kay bass better) and he did a few interesting things. I need a new bridge, any recommendations?
