Blonde Finish?

From looking at images of old Double Bass instruments it appears the older ones where darker, brownish, reddish in color. At what point in time did makers start producing a light finished "Blonde" Double Bass?

Kay produced some blonde basses in the mid-50's but I'm not sure about other makers, specifically carved basses.

There wasn't a ton of those old Kay basses that were blonde either. Many of them available now, were once dark basses that have been refinished at some point.

I hope this helps.

Question Ask Roger . . .

Model S-8. A 1947 catalog says the S-8 is the same as the S-1 and S-9 except it offers a different color. S-1 is brown toned; S-9 is blonde and the S-8 was advertised as "honey colored".

Wood does get darker with age, as well. May be a lot of old blonde basses that are "normal" colored now ;D
