Breaking it In

I apologize if this has been said before or if this topic is common, but I'm slightly confused as to what exactly constitutes a "broken in" bass.

I recently got my bass about six months ago. It's a laminate, but well-constructed and the A and E strings bellow out some thunderous tones. The D and G aren't as heavy and it's got two Wolf notes--the "A" on the D string and the high A on the G string. I noticed though, that the original sound has changed. It was a very fresh, slightly-scratchy-sounding instrument when I got it, but it's quite different now.

The sound is smoother and throatier, the bass itself just sounds clearer and not as muddled as when I got it. Is this the instrument or me? Or a combination of the two? I recently got my bow rehaired as well and that's probably still breaking in as well. Could it be a trifecta of goodness that all converge over the pinnacle of good sound?

Many thanks in advance.
