buying a bass

hi all.
I've had my double bass on "extended" loan for the last few years, but have to give it back!it was about 60 years old, not bad but falling apart! Need to get a new one and was checking thomann(not really sure about them for double basses!) I was looking at one of the models for 3000eu. like the one at this link http://www.thomann.de/ie/thomann_kontrabass_44_4.htm. anyone know anything about them? or where could i get a good model for that price in ireland? thanks!

Hi there. I'm in Ireland too and for what it's worth, I've been looking at Thomann basses as well (although the cheaper hybrid ones). The basses themselves are Strunals, which seem to be good low-end basses, but many people on this board suggest that buying a bass unseen is not ideal, which is obviously good advice. However, Ireland seems to be very limited in terms of choice (and expensive, too). Thomann seem to do a pretty good setup job on their basses (see T-34's thread) so I reckon I'm going to get one from them and then take it to a luthier for final set up.

Hey gents, I know of one violin shop in Ireland, and they do speak bass. I don't know what they stock or how much, but here ya go:

Crehan Musical Instruments
6 Carberry Road
Drumcondra
Dublin 9, Ireland
353 1 8372351
www.crehans.ie

There are plenty of comments around here about Strunals, a lot of people are pretty happy with theirs.
G/L!

I'm in Galway, but willing to travel, so if you have any leads I'd be glad to hear them.

Thanks for that - I gave them a call and they have a fully-carved Korean (?) bass with ebony fingerboard, bag, bow and decent strings for 1500euro, which is about my budget. Next time I'm in Dublin I'm going to check them out...

Cheers
