So the mystical Mr. Smith's idea that it might be a factory instrument with a mostly meaningless label seems right. Perhaps not a mystery to those surrounded by valuable, enigmatic gems of divine origins like him.
Bid on it and see if there's any info in the catalog.
It seems like an old Metropolitan Music-type mail-order lutherie supply place.

Not a luthier or violin supply, but perhaps something that might have grown out of an intstrument supply company.
The "master craftsman" refered to in the historical section may be Herr Muller, but perhaps he only ever crafted labels to stick on factory instruments. Or maybe he started as a luthier, then found mail order to be a better enterprise...then "muller lack" restoration.
