Carl Wultur bass?

So I may be getting a Carl Wultur bass. Flatback. 7/8.

$4,800 new.

Is it worth it? It sounds far more beautiful than most basses I have heard.

But its really plain and "boring" looking. Like the tuners are square gold plates. And not the whole 2 plates on each side.

It has a simple striking look to it though. With is deep dark wood. Simple- yet just perfect.

What do they sound like compared to other top companies of the same price?

I have two friends with Wulturs. After about 4 years both basses have matured a bit and have a great tone. These are good basses for the money and very playable.

Like I said in the other thread, it's Calin Wultur, like this one:

Agreed that these can be nice basses. Remember, however, that Wultur, a Romanian outfit imported and distributed here by J&R Music (Rhode Island), makes several grades of DBs. Some are better than others.

Some luthiers will purchase Wulturs (and other brands) and sell them under their own name. I have a belief that my bass (currently for sale in the Classifieds), is one of them. I know it came from J&R at some point. Nonetheless, it's a very good bass.

Calin Wultur 7/8 sizes

With the robust Romanian build, my preference is strongly toward the larger sizes in this line. The 42" string length gets the top moving more effectively.

I have one. It's a fully carved "panormo" model flatback, and it's on consignment at Hammond Ashley in Seattle. When I bought it, I compared it to a Shen hybrid, another Romanian instrument (I forget the name), and a pair of modern carved German instruments (Wilfers, I think).

Of those instruments, I thought all sounded pretty good. I'm not a big fan of Chinese instruments (old prejudice - friends of mine have had bad experiences, though I understand that Shens are well-respected). The Wilfers were more expensive and didn't sound that much better. The other Romanian instrument sounded a bit dead.

In the end, I purchased the Wultur to replace the Kay I'd started on thirteen years earlier. At the time, I was coming back to the double bass from several years off. After a year of playing, I decided I was dedicated enough that I wanted a nicer instrument and along came the Kai Arvi that I play now.

Anyway, long story short - as you've already been told, every bass is different, and you should play any potential purchase for your teacher, especially before you drop $5K on it. We can't tell you over the internet what that bass is worth. That said, the Calin Wulturs I've played (2 or 3 by now) have been reasonable, and the one I owned held up well while I used it.

Mjt0229, that is the bass I played that your talking about! The panormo is a beautiful shape.

But I am not going to get the Calin as I did not find it was as beautiful or well rounded sound as the $4400 A Cavallo bass they had
