It's called a bib, look at Kolstein's or Lemur's website...

You can get a nice corduroy bib from Hammond Ashley too. You might have to go to the shop however. Don't know if they sell them on-line or by mail order. They're made in Seattle.

Both Lemur and Kolstein sell the "short" bibs. I got the one below from Gage. They seem to have them available sporadically. If anyone knows of another source of "full-length" bibs, please do tell.

Those are nice; I've had mine for a long time now. Much better (imo) than the velour/satin stuff that a lot of bibs are made from.

Thumbs up They're back!

The bibs are, once again, available for sale at Gage. They are not yet on their we site but you can order them by calling or emailing. They have them available with no pocket in black and maroon and with a pocket in black. I ordered another black one.

I certainly have not noticed any such effect. For me anyway, even if there were a slight difference, it would be worth it in terms of the protection they offer.

They help protect the upper bout from the dreaded "belt buckle scuff", which you see on many many older basses.

Yep-- and they, at least, protect the upper bout from scratches made by the floor when you lay down the bass.

Not dumb...good for you for having the salt, humility, and open-mindedness to ask!

Bibs help protect basses from belt buckles, buttons, pencils, tie clips, whathaveyou, that would otherwise murl up the instrument's finish. Even with a bib, its good to turn one's belt buckle to the right...

Helps the finish intact in the spots where human clothing and/or sweat can do some harm.

The thinking seems to be that it can be a nice thing to do for an instrument that a person wants to keep in good shape.

Thank you- it's not in wikipedia. Talkbass(esp DB)[is greater than]wiki.
Edit: This is all a bit moot w/my DB; it looks as if it's been dragged behind a horse(the edges are so rough that a bib would actually protect me ), and because of my incessant slab-flipping* I habitually turn my belt to avoid the devaluing effects of the dreaded rash- even when I'm nowhere near a bass.

*Buy, fail to fall in love, sell, rinse, repeat monthly.

You got me thinking (oops) and looking. Here's one that is full-length and corduroy.

Too bad about the current exchange rate...

Whoa! I forgot about that one! There's "full-length" and then there's "full-length." I was considering the Gage one "full-length" but now that you point this one out, I guess we'd have to call the Gage one "mid-length." I think the full-length one makes the bass look like it's trying to impersonate Count Dracula.

A note on "short bibs." I used to have a Kolstein bib. It fastens around the neck and just hangs on the upper bout. One time, I put the bass down and the bib spun around onto the floor. When I went to pick up the bass, I inadvertently stepped on the bib and then lifted the neck. I got it a few inches off the floor when WHAM!-- the bass was yanked back down to the floor. Fortunately, there was no damage. No more short bibs for me. It's called "one-trial learning."

They also probably protect the bass from sweat. I should probably get one of those for the summer months.

In addition to protecting the bass, some have small pockets, for a pencil, tuning fork, rosin, whatever.

This may ruffle some feathers but i wonder what the point of protecting the finish is if you are just covering it up and can't see it any way? It seems a little pointless, unless of course you are planning on reselling the bass. I don't know. Sorry if i have offended anyone who loves bibs.

I guess we have different basses.

probably very different basses, but more so an apparently quite different philosophy.
